Dr. Lance Timmerman was the first guest on the Dental Hacks podcast. Since then, he's started a bunch of podcasts: The Whole Tooth, Smile Source Radio and my favorite "Totally Oral." He interviewed me for the Totally Oral podcast recently about an article I wrote in Dental Economics about the ethics for Search Engine Optimization. I got his permission to post it as a special episode for Dental Hacks listeners...just before Christmas! We talked about SEO ethics, TSA precheck, blogging and what kind of marketing works. So...take a listen and then go subscribe to "Totally Oral." Lance gets interesting guests and is a good interviewer. It'll be worth your time! Oh...and Merry Christmas! As you've come to expect from the Dental Hacks, Jason gives an honest account of the good, the bad and the ugly of his startup history. If you've ever thought about starting a practice from scratch or are pretty sure you don't want to...you should listen. We really want to thank our listeners for all their support. With today's current diagnostic criteria the prevalence of autism in children is 1 in 68. 1 in 42 for boys. What does that mean for dentists? We're going to need to understand austism and learn to treat them in our offices. Dr. Jacob Dent is a dentist in Sugarland, TX that teaches other dentists how to help families and individuals dealing with autism with their dental health. In episode 77, Dr. Dent and Alan discuss strategies for treating people on the autism spectrum in the office. More importantly, both Jacob and Alan have children on the autism spectrum and they discuss how the diagnosis affected them, how it's changed their life and how it's changed the way they work with children and adults on the autism spectrum. Also, at the end of episode 77 the Hacks describe some of the amazing content that they have in store for 2016 and announce that they'll be "dark" for the month of December while they retool the show! Have a great holiday season and set your clocks for 10am EST on January 5th, 2016 for the the new and improved Dental Hacks! |

Dr. Cory Glenn is a "MacGyver" dentist. This means doing your best with what you have and it often leads to innovation in techniques. Cory has developed (and demonstrated) a lot of innovative techniques he's developed over the years and he talks about them with the Dental Hacks in episode 75! On particularly interesting aspect of this interview is how he's transitioned from free hand implant placement to primarily guided techniques. His interview (as well as his YouTube channel) is not to be missed! The Brain Trust segment features 3 Dental Hacks favorites and 3 different digital impression scanners. What are the pros and cons of their system? Do they miss using the gooey stuff? What would they tell someone looking to get into digital impressions or upgrade from their current system? Everyone has that patient that needs a full mouth rehab and can afford about a crown and a half per year. What do you do with these people? Well, our guest for episode 75 is Dr. Cory Glenn and he's here to help. Cory is a dentist and educator that give back a LOT to the profession. In episode 74 we focus on helping dentists become owners. Practice owners are more likely to do well financially than associates and ownership allows flexibility that being an associate or employee will never have. Jason Wood is a dental attorney at Wood and Delgado specializing in dental business transactions like finding and buying a practice. In episode 74 he explains how to find the ideal practice to purchase, discusses how dentistry is a perfect career for women and what dentistry might look like in the future! Jason's email is Jason@dentalattorneys.com and he encourages you to email him to ask questions! Episode 74 features a really great discussion of clinical delegation in the dental office. Dr. Dawn Kulongowski, Dr. Tammy Bailey and Dr. Tiffany Lee join Alan to talk about how they implement clinical delegation in their offices. Who takes final impressions in your practice? Are you assistants trained to do expanded functions? You'll love this discussion and it will probably make you think about if you're delegating too much or not enough! The ugly truth is that sometimes dentists need lawyers. Often we need lawyers when we don't even know we need lawyers. Jason Wood, a lawyer for dentists, is here to help you understand when you do and don't need a lawyer. Jason handles all kinds of dental business transactions...the big ones. Partnerships, associateships, purchasing and selling dental practices. If you've spent any time on DentalTown you probably know of him. He's a partner at Wood and Delgado and in episode 73 we talk about some of the legal mistakes that dentists make:
In this week's Brain Trust segment we pick up our conversation with Dr. Art Volker and international dentists Dr. Serhat Koken of Turkey and Dr. Andrew Chandrapal from the UK. In the second half of our discussion we dig deep into the roots of how they've become the amazing clinicians that they are. At the root of this is a web group/Facebook group called Style Italiano. This and several private groups that encourage excellence and posting cases have taken their clinical successes to new heights! Bob Sommers told us about asking for reviews in the last episode, but he REALLY knows how to generate referrals. His "5 Star Review System" works well for both. But he strongly feels that the referrals in generates is the real magic. How comfortable are you asking for referrals? Do you have a way to make it easy? Bob talks about how create a mostly automatic system to generate a constant flow of new patients primed to love you and the service you provide! Remember if you try the 5 Star Review System but sure to let them know you heard about it on the Dental Hacks for $50 off the set up fee! Have you ever wondered what it's like to be a dentist in another country? Dr. Art Volker from episode 60 is a fan of high end dentistry and he's found that some of the most amazing dentistry is being done in other countries. At his suggestion we've decided to feature some international dentists in the Brain Trust. Art and Alan talk to Dr. Serhat Koken of Istanbul, Turkey and Dr. Andrew Chandrapal near London, UK. Both Serhat and Andrew teach cosmetic and restorative dentistry in their respective countries and are beginning to teach internationally. We discuss the similarities and differences in the educational systems, ways of practicing, taking continuing education among other things. Both Andrew and Serhat are really big participants in private dental Facebook groups, particularly "Style Italiano." Everyone wants reviews in Google, Yelp and all the rest. And everyone always says, "the best way to get reviews on Google is to ask for them." Sure. Sounds great, but how do you do it? Who should ask? When do you ask? Bob Sommers from bestlocalreviews.com created the "5 Star Review System." He knows the best way to ask for reviews. He has research to back up his claims. And he tells you exactly how to ask. In our interview with Bob Sommers we do a deep dive on how reviews work and the very best way to get them. In our Brain Trust segment we talk about all the different ways think about new patients. We spend a little time talking about what we consider a "new patient." Is a patient that enters your practice as an emergency a "new patient?" Or are new patients only the ones who allow you to do a comprehensive exam? Listen to perennial favorites Dr. Matt Standridge, Dr. Melissa Zettler and Dr. Lance Timmerman as they weigh in on what constitutes a new patient. "My goal was to open an office where we could offer every service available dentally that would be convenient and affordable for everybody to come in." In episode 67 we continue our conversation with Dr. Dennis Frazee. He's a relatively new grad. Like 2012 new grad. His startup is growing like crazy and he tells us about his keys to his success. First, he tells us a bit about how he chose his location and how important that ended up being. Secondly, he sings the praises of being able to sedate patients in his office safely and reliably. Last, he tells us where he focused his time and money (and how he financed it) on CE. This interview is packed with so many pearls you might as well make a necklace out of it! Posterior composites are a mainstay of general dentists. A lot of us do them all day long and we're comfortable. Then we run across case presentations on DentalTown or Facebook that make us rethink our approach. Some dentists have created techniques to take posterior composites from "just a filling" to full blown dental porn. In episode 60 we get to talk to three of these dentists! Dr. Art Volker, Dr. Matt Costa and Dr. Stephen Kuzmak are three young clinician's who have committed to better composite techniques. In today's episode, you'll hear about what inspired them, how they learned these techniques and everything you need to know to follow their path. How badly did you want to go to dental school? How many rejections would it have taken for you to decide dental school wasn't for you? Or were you like Dr. Mark Costes and wouldn't take no for an answer? Today's episode features Dr. Mark Costes, a succesful multiple practice owner, dental practice coach and entrepreneur. He tells us about some of the challenges he had to overcome to become a dentist and how he's leveraged his dental training to become much more than just a practicing dentist. This might be the most important episode of the DentalHacks podcast that we've ever done. In today's episode we interview Dr. Roy Shelburne. He spent 19 months in prison for things that you may be unknowingly doing in your practice. Dr. Shelburne speaks all over the country helping dentists with their record keeping in an effort to avoid the life changing consequences he experienced. You'll hear these questions answered:
Dentists, you need to listen to this. But maybe more importantly your team really needs to hear this. Dr. Shelburne can help you bring your documentation to a level that avoids legal problems. The key to local search is reviews. Good reviews not only get you in that coveted "7 pack" on Google, but new patients read reviews that your patients write, and often choose based on excellent reviews! But every dentist who has tried to get reviews, particularly Google reviews, knows that it's not easy. Everything we know about remineralization is wrong and other honest research with Dr. Rella Christensen (DHP49)
In episode 49 the DentalHacks are trying something a little different. We've gotten feedback from a few listeners that they would prefer an entire long form interview on the show instead of splitting them over more than one show. So for those folks, we're trying it out. And there's no one better to do a deep dive with than Dr. Rella Christensen. Rella Christensen was one of the founders of Clinical Research Associates (now TRAC). They've essentially been the "Consumers Reports" for dentistry for the better part of 40 years and you won't find anyone more knowledgeable on dentistry and dental materials than Rella. Our interview shows her kind demeanor as well as her no nonsense treatment of the data. She's going to change some minds with her discussion of modern crown and bridge materials, particularly monolithic zirconia and she's probably going to ruffle some feathers when she talks about enamel remineralization protocols and how everything we think we know about remineralization is wrong! Oh...and don't get her started about sugar. This is a really good interview with one of the smartest people in dentistry. Drink it all in, DentalHacks listeners! Dr. David Hornbrook was on the ground floor with the cosmetic dentistry revolution. In today's episode he discusses what it's like to be on the cutting edge of teaching dentists cosmetic dentistry and how it's changed over the years. From PFM crowns to minimally invasive veneers, he's seen it all and tells an interesting story of where he thinks the profession is heading. Recently David began working with Keating Dental Arts as the Director of Clinical Education and Technology and in episode 40 he gave us links to all sorts of materials and cementation guides that he has produced. In today's Brain Trust segment we bring on 3 favorites: Dr. Tammy Bailey, Dr. Matt Standridge and Dr. Brent Young to talk about treatment planning and getting the most out of your hygiene recall exams. But first, the Brain Trust veers into an interesting discussion about the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision on mall kiosk bleaching. To celebrate the 40th episode of the DentalHacks podcast we feature an interview with the incomparable Dr. David Hornbrook! Dr. Hornbrook is a founder of the Las Vegas Institute, PAC-live and the Hornbrook Group. He's a wet fingered dentist and influential dental educator who has mentored thousands of dentists in his career. Also, he answers email. Which seems like a silly thing to mention except that his approachable manner makes him one of the most popular dental educators today! Most recently David has begun working with Keating Dental Arts as the Director of Clinical Education and Technology and we discussed some of the new educational offerings that David will be involved with at Keating. From there, we talked about communicating with the lab and the inevitable conflict that happens between lab technicians and dentists. Is it the lab tech's place to tell you that your impression sucks? Do you want to hear it? From there we moved into discussing digital impressions and where dental technology is heading. We finish up our 3 part Brain Trust series recorded live in Chicago in Dawn Kulongowski's hotel room (if you must know). We finish up our discussion with how to get paid. Tarun discusses his implementation of in house financing and wonders why you haven't taken advantage of this amazing option in your office! (For more details, enjoy our DentalHacks special on in house financing here!) So don't miss Dr. Rich Rosenblatt, Dr. Tarun Agarwal, Dr. Tammy Bailey and Dr. Linc Harris as they weigh in! Dr. Linc Harris has an interesting practice. Lots of complex restorative treatment, yet no hygienist. With the marketing success he's had, he's developed a technique to clarify the patient's wants and needs without taking on their problems. In today's episode of the DentalHacks podcast, he explains how to consult slow and treat fast to Alan and Brain Trust favorite Dr. Dawn Kulongowski! Our all-star live Brain Trust continues with a discussion of how dental meetings and CE have changed. Are there too many dental meetings? Is organized dentistry out of touch with what dentists really need? We recorded live from Chicago during the Midwinter meeting with some of the Brain Trust favorites (Dr. Tammy Bailey, Dr. Dawn Kulongowski) as well as some of the DentalHacks favorite guests! We feature Dr. Tarun Agarwal, Dr. Rich Rosenblatt and Dr. Linc Harris.

This week's episode is kind of different. In our interview segment we feature a discussion with Dr. Linc Harris. Linc is a dentist in the small town of Bundaberg in the province of Queensland in Australia. He's a self professed small town dentist who has had amazing success! In today's episode Linc talks about how his practice "out in the middle of nowhere" has become an amazing success! He's a marketing genius who's had luck with a lot of different modalities and he talks all about it with Alan and Brain Trust favorite Dr. Dawn Kulongowski! Today's Brain Trust is the first of it's kind. Linc Harris all sitting down and talking about dental meetings, CE and a a recent trip to the Weiner Circle. Brain Trust segments don't get much better, or funnier, than this! What is your comfort zone? At what point do you start to get nervous in patient treatment? Laying a flap? Removing bone? Finding the MB2? Sinus lifts? Every dentist has their own limits, but where do these limits start? Alan and Dr. Darin O'Bryan (classmates from the University of Minnesota class of 1997) discuss the roots of the dental comfort zone and how to push beyond where you're comfortable. You can find out more about Dr. O'Bryan at www.onemorereasontosmile.com. Have you ever noticed that often times patients hear what they want to hear instead of what we explain to them? The Brain Trust consisting of Dr. Dawn Kulongowski, Dr. Tiffany Lee and Dr. Tammy Bailey along with Alan continue their "bitch session" featuring passive/aggressive patients a heated argument about polishing teeth and other good stuff! Dr. Darin O'Bryan is a wet fingered clinician and CEREC educator. If you saw his schedule, you might think he's the hardest working man in show business! Darin teaches many of the CEREC Accept courses outside of Scottsdale for CEREC Doctors and it just so happens that he's a classmate of DentalHacks host Alan Mead. In this episode, Darin and Al catch up on the cool stuff that he's gotten into since dental school including an interesting discussion on denturists in Oregon and a crossover discussion on mid-level providers! Episode 36 features the Brain Trust breaking some new ground! The Brain Trust decides that we're just going to have a good, old fashioned "bitch session." We're tired of it and we're not going to take it any more! We cover being sick at work, vaccinations, antibiotic prophylaxis and antibiotic overuse in dentistry. What starts out as complaining ends up being a pretty awesome discussion! Episode 36 also marks the first "ladies night" Brain Trust where we feature women only as guests! You'll hear favorites Dr. Dawn Kulongowski, Dr. Tammy Bailey and Dr. Tiffany Lee weigh in. Don't even think of missing it! Laura Hatch can help your front desk collect more money, reduce patient cancellations and failures and fill your schedule. #notkidding In episode 35 we talk about some specific scenarios where the training videos produced by Front Office Rocks can help. 10 years from now, dentistry will look like... That's what the Brain Trust is discussing in episode 35. In this little time capsule we wonder if we'll have any more or less specialties in dentistry and how independent private practice may look like in 10 years. So how do you train your front desk staff? It's not like you know how to do all that stuff. Nor do you have time to learn it. That's where Laura Hatch comes in. Laura is the founder of Front Office Rocks, an online training site specific to dental front offices. In episode 34 we talk to Laura about how she became a front office rock star (FORS) and how she wants to help dentists create practices with office systems that run like a well oiled machine! What do you think dentistry will look like in 10 years? That's the question we asked the Brain Trust in episode 34. Dr. Lance Timmerman and Dr. Melissa Zettler join Jason and Alan to talk about what the future of dentistry looks like and where we'll be. (Hint: Timmerman mentions real estate. Twice.) In today's episode we continue our discussion with dental coach/consultant/practice owner/podcaster Gary Takacs! Gary talks about why it is so hard to keep new and beneficial changes going in your office from the voice of experience! He's both a consultant helping with the changes and a practice owner dealing with similar difficulties in his own practice! Be sure to catch Gary's podcast, "The Thriving Dentist Show!" The Brain Trust continues our discussion about practice systems. Dr. Tammy Bailey, Dr. Frank Clayton, Dr. Melissa Zettler and Dr. Brent Young do a little complaining, a little laughing and a little bit of inventing! Toward the end of our segment we invent a potentially cool way to make small changes in your office and coin the term "microconsulting." In today's episode we talk with fellow podcaster and practice management coach/consultant, Gary Takacs! Gary's podcast is "The Thriving Dentist Show" and has over 150 episodes and has been ongoing since 2011! We talk about podcasts: what he listens to and how he got started. Then we move onto his practice. Gary is part owner of a dental practice in Arizona. He talks a little about how he and his dentist partner found a "fixer upper" practice and turned it into the practice that they wanted. It's very interesting to hear how a practice management consultant literally built his own "dental test kitchen" to benefit his clients! The Brain Trust features a discussion about practice systems. What are they? Why does it seem so hard to implement them? Dr. Tammy Bailey, Dr. Frank Clayton, Dr. Melissa Zettler and Dr. Brent Young discuss their own experience with developing and implementing office systems. It sounds kind of dry, right? Whether you're an employer or an employee you'll get a lot out of episode #31! We spend the whole show talking with some Brain Trust all stars about their experience as employers and how to find, keep and fire employees! The episode was inspired by some recent HR changes at Dr. Matt Standridge's practice in Eureka, KS. He joins Jason and Alan along with Dr. Melissa Zettler and Dr. Lance Timmerman to talk about the best ways to find employees, how to know who to hire and when to fire. In episode 30 we continue our interview with Dr. Barry Glassman. Dr. Glassman is a dentist and educator who gave up general practice to focus on treating patients with craniofacial pain and sleep disorders. We spend most of the interview talking about occlusion. Does occlusion cause disease? Does it cause pain? Does it really even matter that much? The Brain Trust continues it's decidedly NSFW conversation about analogies that we use to explain complex ideas to patients. You might want to skip this one if there are kids in the car. Or if you're drinking anything...unless you want it to come out your nose! Alan wants to get into "What's Hot" in iTunes.
