And no matter what, once you free up some time, other things will grow to fill that time.

Alan is joined by Dr. Rob Ritter to talk about a couple of bad beats he had. Perfing an endo and punting a tough extraction had Al wondering if he should be doing these procedures in his office. Rob is a proud “restorative dentist” by choice and has described his approach as “from the gums up.” How did he decide what he wanted to include in his practice? Why did he decide to leave a lot of “specialty” procedures out? Some topics we covered:

Dr. Jason Smithson returns to the Very Dental podcast to talk about an important topic in 2024: focus.

Jason suggests that one of the reasons we might not get the clinical results is that we've lost our ability to focus! This actually applies more widely in our lives.

It will come as no surprise what he believes is the cause.

• Smartphones are a tool and not a friend

• The "comprehensive reply" to avoid 
• Default Zoom meeting times are an HOUR!

This throwback episode features Dr. John Burgess. I heard of his recent passing and thought it would be very appropriate to replay a spectacular interview I was privileged to have with him back in 2022.

Do you have advice that you've heard that you use on almost every single procedure? I do. And it came from today's guest, Dr. John Burgess.

Dr. Burgess is the assistant Dean for Clinical Research at the University of Alabama at Birmingham as well as Director of the Graduate Biomaterials Program and was recently featured on the main stage at the Spear Summit 2022. 

But I heard John at the Spring Vedder society meeting some years back and some of the things he said have stayed with me to this day. It was a true pleasure to get to talk with John about what he does, how materials research should be done and how dentists can be better at understanding materials.

Alan is joined by Dr. Matt Standridge. Matt is a dentist in Kansas who teaches orthodontics and has his own podcast and health coaching program! Gen X has seen a lot. We've been around for the introduction of cable tv through the smartphone and social media. Gen X dentists started practicing in the "golden age of cosmetic dentistry" of the 90's and we've seen a lot of change. Some of it for the better and quite a bit of it for the worse.

Dr. David Whitlock spent the first 10 or so years of his career practicing dentistry in big cities. He's seen some stuff and he ended up in Eastern Kentucky. Rural dentistry has been great for him and he's here to spread the word!

Dr. Russell Schafer joins Alan to talk about mental health. The two of them have experience with mental health treatment of different kinds. Russell has struggled on and off with mental health issues that he's pretty convinced started in dental school. Go figure. Dr. Paul Springs is a prosthodontist who practices in Queens, NYC. The last time we heard from Paul, he was swabbing patients for COVID tests in 2020 to finish out his prosthodontics residency.

A few weeks ago I sat down on the swing that we have in our front yard and recorded a statement for Instagram. Bottom line...if you're a regular dentist doing regular dentistry, that's enough. Social media isn't real and it isn't real life. Dr. Dennis Harblieb saw this and wanted to talk about it on his podcast, so we had a conversation!

The conversational roller coaster consisted of:

• Dental photography is important for dentists. Instagram photography isn't realistic for most of us.
• Al's "super bloody gums" Instagram
• Just because Michael Jordan was a "once in an era" talent that doesn't mean that the rest of the players in the NBA had to hang it up.
• Execute to the best of your own ability
• Has social media made dentists less likely to save teeth?
• Just because so much of what we see on social media is the big and fancy stuff doesn't mean that people don't need plain old general dentistry
• Social media pushes us to put our best face forward vs. what's actually happening in our life
• Choose your times for social media and do it for entertainment
• Don't go on social media when you're in an emotionally down time...it can be self administered poison
• Social media isn't really set up for teaching. It's designed to create a dopamine rush vs. delivering knowledge

The 2023 Spear Summit is happening right this very moment and unfortunately, Al wasn't there this time. Some amazing podcast conten has been created over the years at this meeting. So in celebration of our friends at Spear Education having their summit, we're throwing back to the very first "face to face" podcast interview I ever did with Dr. Frank Spear at the 2019 Spear Summit. IT's a little bit of time travel because this discussion happened before the pandemic, before masking and before Zoom meetings became a way of life. I think you'll find it pretty interesting.

"Jason and Alan had the privilege of sitting down with the one and only Dr. Frank Spear. We had an hour during the Spear Summit to pick up where we left off from  episode 235 and it was very interesting.
