Alan is joined by his friend Dr. Brett Kessler to have a VERY frank talk about how people make changes in their lives. Both of them are in long term recovery from drugs and alcohol which gives them an interesting perspective on how people make behavior changes in their life. Some of the topics we discuss are:
The "time machine" game and how our past experiences are formative
How do recovering people deal with social situations where people are drinking?
Dentists suffered during COVID because so much was out of their control
How do people make positive changes in their behavior?
Running sucks
Counting streaks
Results don't come fast enough to drive early motivation...so how do we maintain motivation?
Did fear of COVID change Al's behavior?
How much dental disease is preventable by behavior change (home care, diet, smoking, etc.)?
Is behavior change a simple matter of education? (spoiler: hell no!)
Consequences can drive behavior change. But they don't always.

Dr. Russell Schafer graduated from LSU in 2013, Dr. Sarah Meyer graduated from Creighton in 2011 and Dr. Maggie Saludis graduated from University of Maryland in 2018! Each of them brings their own trauma/hilarity to the conversation! Some of the topics we covered are:
instructor hazing
classmates being removed
operative practicals
casting gold
pediatric dentistry term papers and marathons
taking (and failing) boards
the ethical ramifications of boards
using your brother as a boards patient
Got your own dental school horror stories? Join the Very Dental Facebook group (use password: Timmerman) and freak us all out there!
Everyone loves the Jason Smithson-esque class IV composite done with a gorgeous wax up and beautifully layered composites placed with precision using a polyvinyl stent. These "double half caff mochaccinos with a twist and extra sprinkles can be found all over Instagram and Facebook groups. They're awesome and everyone should learn to do them.
But quite often a case lands in your schedule that doesn't allow you to do the prep work for this. Sometimes you have to settle for a vanilla latte. And vanilla lattes can be delicious!
Al gives you his recipe for a consistent and satisfying "vanilla latte" class IV that can make you and your patient happy with a quick and simple appointment!
We start off talking about summer vacations! Summer is here and we’re excited, and summer plans seem real this year!
As new dentists begin to graduate this year, we reminisce on our own beginnings in dentistry, failures we made and things we’d tell ourselves if we had a time machine.
Topics include:
Anesthesia
Don’t be stingy on how much you give
Have a skull to review anatomy when you get into slumps
When you are slower, give more anesthesia for duration of anesthesia
Have a youtube video of a block saved and ready to review
Cold test prior to prepping
Preps:
Cavity Prep are you being too conservative? The answer is probably yes
Is your class ii box too small? Probably
Bevel big for class V’s
Small class IV chips can be a big problem for you without over-engineering it.
Lots of good pro-tips this week for the younger dentist.
Check out the Very Clinical Facebook group for more on these topics, and so much more.
Welcome to the first episode of "Very Dental Shorts!" All of the goodness of the Very Dental podcast now in "Fun Size!"
A lot of what we use in dentistry is expensive. Some of this stuff costs a bunch of money and sometimes we try and cut corners. Al offers three "expensive" items that he uses every day that are worth the money and he wouldn't live without!
Why buy the "expensive" one? They're noticeably better than any other product I've tried.
Purchase Zirc Crystal HD mirrors and the Septodont Paroject at Crazy Dental and you'll get the best price I've found on them anywhere. Use coupon code VDP10 and you'll get 10% off of that!
Buy an Enova Qubit Cool or PLT 100a using this link: for a 18% discount (or 20% discount with loupes and a light!)

The Vedder Society invitation: September 24-26th, come see Dr. David Hornbrook with Al!
Dr. Sara Rosen joins Alan to talk about dental school, the new grad experience and what it's like to be a part of the "COVID class."
Dr. Sara Rosen recently graduated from the Touro College of Dental Medicine in New York. They discussed all kinds of things including dental school, residencies, boards, clinical competency and being a student in the COVID era! Also, Alan offered some of the wisdom from members of the Very Dental Facebook group to new graduates and dental students!
The conversation:
Sara attended the Touro College of Dental Medicine which is BRAND NEW!
New York licensing and residencies
Why choose a residency?
New dental schools and adding bagels...the problems that new schools have to address
How did the dental school handle COVID?
Transitioning from dental school to "post dental school"
How is Dr. Rosen thinking about dental school debt? Did she understand the debt she would be facing?

The Very Clinical Podcast welcomes Dr. Ash Mark of All Things Dentistryfame is back with us to discuss all things Canadian, all things endo, and all sorts of other things.
We kick off by discussing our favorite Canadian acting legends.
Then into a rousing discussion about MB2 and cone beam for endo.
If you’re on Dentaltown Ash recommends Hank’s Guide to the MB2 as a definitive topic thread on MB2.
Ash has 4 different videos on all aspects of MB2, all shot through a scope. Kind of a visual expansion of that thread.
Kevin enjoys watching MB2 videos on Christmas morning while his wife is in the shower. Let that sink in for a moment. #nerdalert
There’s European endodontist named John Rhodes - do a youtube search for him, he also produces some great content on endo and specifically MB2.
Ash starts getting into anesthetic chemistry - our minds are blown. Get out your OrGo chem book, or don’t. You do you.
Ash gives a pro tip for PDL anesthesia - 30 gauge super short needles.
Alan is joined by three amazing guests to discuss hiring and how COVID has changed everything when it comes to being an employer!
The guests:
Dr. Matt Standridge is a clinician, educator and podcaster who’s been on the podcast a whole bunch of times and has had some pretty serious hiring and staffing issues over the last year!
Sandy Pardue is the founder of Classic Practice Resources. She’s an absolute wizard with office systems and should be the first person you think of for consulting and team training. Sandy is also a podcaster and has been on the show a bunch of times, too!
Paul Edwards is the founder of CEDR Solutions. You need employee handbooks and CEDR Solutions is who you should get them from. Also...CEDR Solutions is basically an all in one HR solution for dental offices.
The conversation:
Matt turned over almost his ENTIRE TEAM in the last year! (Oof)
Are people "getting paid to stay home?"
The hiring situation was getting tough before COVID!
Child care, home schooling and family situations have really affected dental hiring
How has politics affected people and their work situation?
State by state unemployment changes
This hiring situation is unprecedented!
ALWAYS BE HIRING!
Work on your hiring skills and culture!
Don't poach, but always be receptive
Sign on bonuses?
Generational differences in hiring moving forward
Sandy presented at a meeting! It's weird, but it's happening!
Voices of Dentistry coming January 21-22, 2022!
Last words from Paul: work on your hiring skills
Last words from Sandy: hire fast, fire fast
Last words from Matt: record a "video explanation" for positions that you're hiring for to screen potential candidates!
Dr. Mark Whitefield joins Alan for a rousing discussion of how implants can change everything for the general dentist. Mark is a fourth generation dentist from Nashville who admits to being obsessed with dental implants!
Mark talks about being accredited in both the AACD and AAID and how that's made him a better dentist.
Mark graduated in the mid 90's during the big cosmetic boom but switched his focus to dental implants in the early 2000's.
What I noticed about Mark is that his mindset is that dental implants can be for anyone. Not just high end/wealthy patients.
Mark hates removable! He tries to get edentulous patients back to TRUE FIXED! (particularly in the mandible)
Cost effective fixed implant restorations are within reach!
What keeps dentists from getting into implants?
Keeping implants in house
Can a person who fears surgery become a surgeon?
Young dentists aren't afraid of anything and they have a ton of debt!
Removing barriers to implant treatment
Mark explains that dental benefits actually cover a lot of implant services
Al is joined by long time listener favorites Dr. Frank Clayton and Dr. Melissa Zettler for a talk about regrets. Between the three of them they've had 72+ years of experiences of dentists and practice owners. Al asks the question: what do you wish you had done better? What regrets do you have? And man did this Group Function come through!
Start saving EARLY! (no, even earlier)
Avoid buying stuff on payments
Use your student loan money wisely
Buy used cars
Not letting employees go sooner
Take more time off...being away from the office is NOT the same as "losing money." Not even close.
Take CE, but don't be in a rush.
Choose CE early that can pay off over a longer career.
Get to a point where you don't care if the patient follows through with care.
Lay the patient back far enough. The patient is only there for an hour. You're there ever day.
Orthodontics is a great choice for a lot more patients than dental school ever taught you.
Make connections with honest colleagues...find people to give honest feedback
Al is joined by his best friend from dental school, Dr. Bart Schultz. Their main conversation focuses on getting the most out of continuing education. Their wide ranging conversation covered a LOT of topics:
Why you should be doing more consults? What does a consult do for you?
Getting reps
Why "my practice isn't like that..." is a cop out
The "surgically comfortable" mindset (some people are just plain less scared to try new stuff)
Getting reps and keeping reps up
Learning that you DON'T want to something is still useful information
Note co-op from dental school
16 finals in 2 days and mixing zinc phosphate
Context and why dental school doesn't work
Dentists and interpersonal skills
How to take away the right stuff from CE
CE as an investment...take CE early = get more from your investment
Al is joined by Dr. Darin Dichter and Dr. Doug Benting, the instructors of a course Al took atSpear Educationin Scottsdale last week! Some of the topics they discussed:
Why doesn’t one size fit all for someone who loses all of their teeth?
Why should dentures be the basis for all cosmetic dentistry? Why is removable the red-headed stepchild of dentistry?
How can you start planning for a “terminal dentition” earlier to make a transition to edentulous easier and more predictable.
Losing teeth is a grieving process!
Informed consent and practicing “slow dentistry”
Do you hate dentures because you’ve bought into the “short cuts?”
All-on-4 is appropriate forsomecases. Not all. Pay in dollars or pay in bone?
Can a patient give informed consent for bone removal like All-in-4? They’ll NEVER get that bone back!
Let’s talk about “terminal” dentition!
Some teeth are hopeless, but not useless
What has Spear done to keep people safe and comfortable in the COVID era
Al sat down with Dr. Jeff Rouse during a recent trip to Scottsdale! Jeff was teaching "Airway Prosthodontics" concurrently with the course that Al was taking and they had a chance to catch up an all things airway!
Jeff's first job might surprise you!
How COVID (temporarily) killed in person CE and what the folks at Spear learned from it
How Frank Spear changed Airway Prosthodontics for Jeff
Why the best airway team members have a personal connection to airway problems
"Airway Aware" and "Airway Directed"
When a grinding appliance is actually an airway appliance?
Are airway problems a modern phenomenon?
Who are the best people in the world according to Al?
Dr. Dawn Kulongowski, Dr. Rich Rosenblatt and Dr. Tammy Bailey join Alan for the "maiden voyage" of the Group Function podcast! We talk about a topic that most Very Dental people can relate to...change! Some highlights:
The first episode of the new podcast (The Very Dental podcast) starts the same way that the old podcast did! With Dr. Lance Timmerman!
Lance once again graces us with his presence for Al to explain where the podcast is heading.
The two of them hop in a time machine to the day after the graduated from dental school to offer their past selves some ideas that might make their lives a bit easier. Some highlights:
try a lot of different ways of practice
get reps
you don't have to do everything if you don't want to
It's hard to dabble in specialty procedures...so be careful before jumping in
Magnficiation...just do it
You probably can't afford the stuff you think you deserve yet
We open up the podcast with a fitting tribute to DMX (maybe only marginally fitting). As an aside Zach would also like to use this space since we won't talk about it on the podcast to also give a tribute to the passing of Shock G from Digital Underground, as the Sex Packets album was his first "Parental Advisory" cassette as a youth.
After a cringe-worthy DMX vs. Shakespeare discussion we immediately get into our clinical topic: Routines
How do you settle on the way you do a procedure? I suspect 10 different dentists would do the same procedure 10 different ways... why? And how do you decide on what you do?
Well that's what we talk about. Crowns, operative..and much much more.
3 dentists, 3 completely different systems. Fully digital, semi-digital, analog. There's room for everyone.
The Dental Hacks Podcast is being rebooted to become the "Very Dental Podcast Network!" Your host and benevolent leader Dr. Alan Mead explains the changes to come and what to expect from your favorite dental podcast feed!
In this Encore Edition of the Dental Hacks Dr. John Khademi and Dr. Eric Herbranson join Alan to talk about the state of endodontics, conserving dentin and how we know what we know.
I got to know Dr. John Khademi in the mid-2000's from Dental Town. I was introduced to Dr. Eric Herbranson in 2011 at the Academy of Microscope Enhanced Dentistry where he talked about the 3D Tooth Atlas he had created. Both are influential endodontists who have controversial ideas about how we've been treating teeth over the years.
Today's episode features a journey from patient based outcomes to case selection, access openings to how we know what we know. There's a fair amount of hero worship here I've been a huge fan of these guys for quite some time. And a bonus...the one and only Dr. David Clark of Bioclear sits down at the end and talks endo!
If you like endo (or even if you don't), this interview will change the way you look at saving teeth!

An Encore episode of the Dental Hacks Shorts featuring the one and only Dr. Kevin Fryer! We recorded this gem at VoD 2020 and it holds up!
The Voices of Dentistry is a great dental meeting, but it's also a great chance to get together with your internet friends! Dr. Kevin Fryer (just call him Kevin) joined Alan before the meeting kicked off to talk about a bunch of fun stuff:
What's the story with being called "Doctor"
Yea or nay on keyboards in rock music
Patients that "fly in to see me"
Materials expiration dates
Pinewood Derby
Our friends at Microcopy Dental have been making Damn Good Burs for more than 50 years! You need to give their single patient use burs a try! You need to request a free sample of their damn good NeoDiamond 1116.8C. It's a work horse round end taper coarse bur for crown preps and operative. It's a terrific bur by any standard, but the fact that it's single patient use means there's no risk of cross contamination and you always get a great cutting, brand-new-out-of-the-package bur. Go check it out at dentalhacks.com/damngoodburs! Let Microcopy's experience change the way you see dentistry with their damn good burs!
Dr. Mike Skramstad and Dr. Meena Barsoum are part of the team at CEREC Doctors and they sat down to talk with Jason and Al! We talk about the history of CEREC and education in the chariside CAD/CAM world. This history is very interesting and the future is even more so! Some of the topics we discussed:
Is German a harder language to learn than Spanish?
Does Rich Rosenblatt thing Meena is the worst student he's ever had?
How many CEREC mills do they actually have at CEREC Doctors (spoiler alert: it's 36!)
What's the sweet spot for length of video?
When did the hands on courses switch to Primescan?
Is now the very best time to be a CEREC dentist?
What's the future of CEREC software? Will it ever be separate from the hardware?
Will milling outside of the CEREC ecosystem always be for experts?
Implant workflows in the CEREC system (milling custom healing abutments anyone?)
How has seeing CEREC failures helped with preparation styles?
What is a "ghost contact?"
How much are user concerns/suggestions taken into account for software/hardware upgrades?
Edentulous arches with CEREC Primescan and digital dentures
Is CEREC Doctors an international phenomenon?
Accept vs. Exceed vs. Level 2

Alan and Jason continue their conversation about specialization. This episode is where we get to the good stuff where we really dig into the pros and cons of specialization and how generalists that long to be known for a particular kind of work might have it wrong! Jason debunks some of Alan's preconceived notions about how having a referral base makes a patient choosing treatment almost automatic. And Alan is mildly crushed.
Also we discuss the excruciating problem of having a 20+ year old practice/patient base and the ups and downs of having a "history" with people. Finally, we open the door to a potential next podcast to talk about an ideal way to do group practice.
You should have a system for polishing. Our friends at Microcopy Dental have just the thing! You've got the surface, they've got the polishers! Dr. Michael Gunson is an oral surgeon who does just one thing. Orthognathic surgery. He joins Jason and Alan to talk about his understanding or the TM joint, occlusion and how that's changed over the years. Some of our topics include:
Treating the TMJ is complicated. No two joints are the same. No two patients are the same.
What is temporomandibular dysfunction?
Does the literature measure what we think it's measuring?
How is treating TMJ troubles like understanding schizophrenia?
How does communication, listening and empathy relate to treating pain and dysfunction patients?
Nose breathing and pattern recognition
Pathology isn't in the thing, the pathology is in the relationships of the things
Adaptation and asking the wrong question
Hormone imbalances and classic presentations of TM dysfunction/facial development
The checklist gets longer and longer (like a CVS receipt)
What is interdisciplinary treatment?
Where do dentists fit in facial esthetics?
Mike will be teaching in a new, updated interdisciplinary treatment planning course from Spear Educastion with rock stars like Dr. Rebecca Bockow, Dr. Gregg Kinzer and Dr. Jim Janakievski!
What's the best way to create an interdisciplinary team?

Jason "Jlips" Lipscomb is back this week as promised and he knows things about the internet that you don't.
We start off by talking about concerts and discover that Jason and Kevin have tasteful broad ranges of musical interests that are compelling and rich. Meanwhile, Zach is excited about his hair band concert and reminisces about a Kid Rock/Tenacious D concert from the early part of the century.
Alan has some post-spring-break thoughts regarding the freedom to travel and personal fitness. He's a thoughtful one, that guy.

Jason and Alan sat down to talk with Dr. Darin Dichter from Spear Education. They were taking the 3-day Occlusion Workshop and Darin was one of the instructors. This wide ranging discussion is spectacular and covers:
Occlusion philosophies
Dental School
Continuing education and the struggle to implement ("getting reps")
Student loan debt
Not all dentists are clinicians!
Critical thinking and understanding the literature
Being a nontraditional student and perspective outside of school
What is a terminal dentition, when do you know how to treat it and what's the "Treating the Terminal Dentition" course all about?

Dr. Lance Timmerman joins Alan to talk about dental insurance. Specifically the idea that patients that want to use their dental insurance are wrong to want that. There are a lot of reasons to hate dental insurance as a dentist but you can't hate patients for wanting to use the insurance that their employer bought for them!

Jason and Alan are joined by prosthodontist Dr. Doug Benting to talk about treating the edentulous arch! A lot of dentists have very little experience with dentures and edentulous arches and for this reason, many (most?) dentists don't like dentures! Doug is here to help!
Is a high school kid that starts working in a dental lab destined to be a prosthodontist?
Is "all on x" all it's cracked up to be?
How do you know when someone's dentition is "terminal?"
Are we too quick to take teeth out?
Dealing with the psychology of people who are probably going to lose their teeth
New and interesting ways to treat edentulous arches with implants
Keeping teeth even though you know they're eventually going to be lost?
What's up with digital dentures? Printing dentures vs. milling
Instagram vs. the fundamentals...why learn dentures?

Grace Rizza of Identity Dental Marketing joins the Dental Hacks to talk about something we should all be aware of. Grace has all kinds of ideas about all kinds of marketing, but in this episode we focus on marketing scams pointed at dentists! It's really insightful and really entertaining! In today's episode we discussed:
How and why Grace entered into the dental marketing field
Hijacking leads (what is a "lead?")
Fear mongering sales tactics (will you go to jail if your website isn't ADA compliant?)
"Hit and run" dental marketing agencies
Google Ad spend scams
Pay-per-lead scams and why you should never pay per lead
Website directory scams
Why annual contracts (and all contracts) should be avoided
There is no such thing as a free website
Why Grace thinks DIY courses are a bad idea
Grace's take away points:
avoid contracts
retain ownership of website hosting and domains
understand the basics, expectations and timelines of marketing

Memorie Valentine joins Alan to consider the idea that patients don't really understand their condition. Even when we do a decent job of explaining what we're seeing, how well do patients really understand it. Sometimes it's in the patient's interest to NOT understand? Lots of wisdom and humor coming from the Dental Hacks favorite hygienist!

From evaluating every printer out there to developing new 3D printers, Jessica is theperson to talk to if you're thinking of 3D printing in your office! Some topics include:
Jessica's background in 3D printing (Uncle Sam helped!)
The military is pretty cutting edge with 3D printing! Also security. Who knew?
3D printing vs. milling (additive vs. subtractive)
3D printing learning curve and working clean
The difference in regulation between a lab vs. a dentist in their office
What is 3D printing and how does it work?
Why do 3D printing in the dental office?
Is 3D printing the best use of the dentist's time?
3D printing workflows that optimize the use of a printer in the office while reducing the time that the dentist needs to spend
CAD software and .stls...nesting and supporting
types of 3D printers (laser, LCD and DLP)
speed and accuracy...where (and when) to use what
Why do you need a "lightbox?"
What is "open" in 3D printing and why would you want this?
You got a printer...now what? How do you get training? (the inevitable August de Oliveira name drop)

You remember in dental school in your biomaterials class. It was the chapter after amalgam. They talked about composites. Different types of composites have different characteristics depending on particle size, etc. Ohhh...that's right. It seems like all you ever hear about composites is "universal." But let's be honest, one size does NOT fit all! If you do any anterior composite work, you really need a microfill! Microfilled composites like Cosmedent's Renamel microfill handle really nicely, have gorgeous translucency and polish like a dream. If it's been awhile since you've used microfill, you owe it to yourself to give it a try again! Our friend and mentor Buddy Mopper was right! Don't dumb down composites to just one type! Get yourself a microfill and see what a difference it makes. It comes in syringes AND compules and I guarantee you'll find a bunch of great uses for it! Check it out at dentalhacks.com/microfill!

The Dental Hacks have taken a LOT of CE over the years. What no one ever wants to tell you is that some really great CE wasn't a great fit. Some highlights:
Should you borrow money to take CE?
Choose CE that's realistic for your practice, your budget and your personality
it's OK if you don't like certain parts of dentistry. In fact, it's NORMAL!
Peer pressure/social media is NOT a good way to choose CE

Dr. Nate Lawson from UAB and Instagram big shot of @dentinaltube fame returns to the podcast for yet another episode.
Nate starts off and shares the trials and tribulations of being on the lecture circuit.
We continue our class II discussion from last week. If you missed last week, our tooth is diagnosed, numbed and isolated and it's time to warm up the drill. Highlights include:
what burs do we use for preps and cares removal
what matrices and wedges do we use
Kevin's gears get grinded by soft matrices
Nate like tor matrices, Dual force Wedges, and Palodent/Triodent Rings
Kevin likes the Palodent/Triodent system all the way through
Zach uses the IMatrix/IdealForm rings/matrices which is a pretty close clone of triodent and the wave wedges from Palodent
Thanks for nerding out with us on Class 2 things over the past 2 weeks. If you want to discuss this episode in more detail, check out the Clinical Hacks Facebook page for more information.

The ketodontist is back again this week and this time we're talking hot tech items.
Matt has made a ton of investments for his practice including:
intra-oral scanners Carestream and Itero
mills
ceph
3d printers
Kevin theorizes that we may actually be living inside the Matrix. We should have an entire episode on this.
Zach wonders if he's even practicing the same profession as Matt and Kevin because at lot of these high tech words are just beyond his tech scope... can't we have an episode on class 1 resins?
Matt makes dentistry seem extremely cool, if tech toys make the practice of dentistry interesting, fun, or more precise and predicable for you, this is the episode for you!
Dr. Artie Volker joins Alan to talk about his recent experience trying a prototype "heads up" display from Enova Illumination! It's not on the market yet, but it tackles some of the interesting problems dentists face daily!

The Dental Hacks are joined by Dr. Gregg Kinzer to discuss continuing education now that we've had a year or so of the pandemic. Some topics we covered:
Spear started back to live CE in September 2020
Why workshops are perfect in person CE...layered learning
What does Spear look like post-pandemic? (spoiler...there are "Popemobile" style plexiglass lab benches!)
The pandemic has given workshop attendees WAY more face time with Gregg and the rest of the instructors!
Some pandemic changes are going to stay! Virtual seminars are likely going to stay. Spear will be virtual and IRL.
Study clubs will change as well...there will be live virtual study club events!
Spear Practice Solutions have a lot of statistics about "post shutdown" opening. Most practices opened strong! Also people feel safe at the dental office!
What does the diagnosis/treatment planning workflow look like in Gregg's office?
Co-discovery and take photos!
How does Gregg handle the "difficult patient?" (poor opening, giant tongue, etc)
Who are the people that Gregg automatically won't treat? (spoiler: follow your gut!)

Dr. Bart Schultz joins Al to talk about medicine. Specifically some of the medical stuff that we've experienced in the last year and why they don't talk about money in medicine. We didn't figure out why. All we know is that dentistry could never get away with what they do in medicine. What we really wonder: can a patient give their informed consent without complete financial consent?
So what’s the solution for simple, consistent zirconia polishing in the mouth? Our friends at Microcopy Dental get it. They’ve created a line of intra oral, single patient use zirconia polishers that are just right. Their simple two-step zirconia polishing system comes in cups or points. It’s easy to use and fits into any workflow. Single patient use means you’ve always got a fresh polisher and there’s no risk of cross contamination. If you want to up your zirconia polishing game you need to check them out at dentalhacks.com/zpolishers!
Dr. Deren Flesher joins the Dental Hacks to talk about mobile dentistry as well as using your position in dentistry to create opportunities outside of the dental office! Deren has a thriving startup practice but has always wanted to own and run businesses besides dentistry. Our conversation is wide ranging about all kinds of businesses! Some topics we discussed are:
Deren owns some Papa John's Pizza joints!
What does Deren consider "the dental bubble?" What kind of dentists should look for opportunities outside dentistry?
How did Deren get into mobile dentistry? How has he incorporated it into his schedule and how is it different than his startup?
Deren enters the cannabis industry! He's involved with a grow operation as well as supply chain/delivery!
How does someone find opportunities "outside the bubble?"
Dentistry is the fuel to Deren's business expansion!
How does Deren build connections with potential business partners? How does he "cross pollenate" business ideas?
Does Deren aspire to be "nonclinical?"

Dr. Shawn Van de Vyver joins Alan again to talk about all things digital! How does a software upgrade make a camera better? What's the best way to get into digital workflow? Chairside "same day" crows are still owned by CEREC, but if you aren't milling, Shawn thinks the Medit makes a ton of sense! How is Shawn using his Amazon Alexa (Echo) to make his office work better? Shawn's single unit zirconia is $7! Who should be milling? Who shouldn't be?

Memorie Valentine RDH joins Alan to talk about prevention. Specifically, how well does our profession do with helping patients do a good job at home? Does dentistry do a good enough job with this? Why don't we have the "oral hygiene instruction" room in every dental office? Why do we clean teeth/do oral hygiene instruction every 6 months instead of a short OHI visit every couple months? Al and Memorie think we can do better! What do you think? Let us know via email at info@dentalhacks.com or tell us in the Dental Hacks Nation Facebook group!

Dr. Jeni Perna is one of those people that likes systems in dental offices. She's an amazing Instagram follow and the office manuals she has created cover all kinds of systems. They're available here and you should definitely check them out! They are VALUE priced! We also talk a little bit about the phenomenon of ethical sales for people who have Instagram influence. It's a thing and Al has a little problem with buying stuff he finds advertised on Insta!

Welcome back to the Clinical Hacks podcast, Dr. Erin Elliott!
On this episode we open with some prank/shenanigans talk where we find out that Erin is Tosh.0 famous and Zach went to weird house music clubs in his 20's and his frugal ways backfire on a friend.
Then we proceed into a technology overload discussion with Cerec, 3D printing...all the sexy expensive tech.
Not surprisingly Zach, champion of all things analog, has little to say.
Erin and Kevin though bring a lot of cool ideas and information if you are considering making the jump to more digital, this is the podcast for you.
Following the thread from last week's discussion, we're taking a close look at how hygienists get paid and, most importantly, how they can get paid well. Rachel Wall (who previously appeared on episode 109) was kind enough to stop by again to discuss how compensation can be most efficiently and fairly distributed throughout any clinic's hygiene department.
Rachel Teel Wall, RDH, BS, is the founder and owner of Inspired Hygiene. Through coaching and seminars, Inspired Hygiene aims to maximize the profit and productivity of every dental team's hygiene department with a particular focus on compensation models. Her two decades of experience in the industry encompasses her time as both a hygienist and an office administrator.
In this episode, Rachel chats with us about the importance of everyone playing their role in a dental practice and what she thinks makes for an ideal compensation model.
EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS:
Interview starts: 2:50
- Looking at the different compensation models available to hygienists.
- Explaining the 3:1 compensation model.
- Understanding everybody’s responsibilities in a dental clinic.
- Making the most of your time, your dentist’s time and managing patient relations.
- What Rachel believes is the best compensation model for everybody involved.
- Finding that right balance between overtreatment and undertreatment.
QUOTES:
“I think everyone should at least be open to adapting and learning new ways.”
“A business owner has a responsibility to make sure the business is profitable, and then we as hygienists have the responsibility to at least be aware of that and know where we stand.”
“I think everybody should have the opportunity to be on the other side of that table at least once in your life because it’s quite sobering.”
“I wanna learn more about your treatment philosophy so that I can do a better job of recommending treatment that matches what you would recommend.”
Jason and Al did a mini episode the day after they each got the COVID-19 vaccine. Neither of them became zombies. Mostly just a sore arm for a day.

The Brain Trust has always been a huge part of the Dental Hacks podcast. We love to feature a round table of regular, "wet fingered' (ew) dentists talking about stuff that all dentists deal with. Episode 215 features three of our original panelists who have been featured over the years. We cover a lot of ground here, including:
Are baseball analogies good for gauging where you are in your dental career?
Would Rich recommend buying and merging a practice?
How is Frank screening kids and adults for airway? (note: it's probably not what you think!)
How has coaching affected their careers?
What technology has been worthwhile? For patient outcomes or simply marketing?
Why are dentists training so much in high dollar procedures vs. the fundamentals?
Are long haul truckers good patients? Is it truck o'clock?
Curbside check in is literally the most 2020 thing ever. Many offices don’t even have waiting rooms any more! Do you want to know the absolute easiest way to do curbside check in at your office? That’s right...you guessed it. Our friends at YAPI make curbside check in a breeze!

Kris's workflow (it's impressive!)
What is the most baller move a CEREC dentist can do with their patient?
What would Kris tell someone who is on the fence with in office milling?
Same day smile design/anteriors!
How did Kris start speaking?
Kris has been giving back to patients in need doing HANDS ON COURSES!
Dr. Justin Moody joined us during the interview to talk about the changes at Implant Pathway in Arizona!

It’s a weird fact of being a dentist...some patients don’t think they can come to the dentist without having some kind of insurance or benefits. Instead of lamenting this fact, why not lean into it? Why not give them benefits? That’s where our friends at Boomcloud come in. BoomCloud has been helping people create and run membership plans in their offices since 2013. You need to check out Boomcloud for yourself. Jordan and our friends have put together the “Ultimate starter guide” for membership plans at dentalhacks.com/boomcloud.

Jason and Alan had the honor of talking with Dr. Frank Spear of Spear Education! This was their first conversation with him since the COVID outbreak and the conversation focused a lot on changes in the landscape of dentistry and dental education!
How has COVID affected dentistry and dental practices?
Some dental practices have done BETTER in 2020! What are the things that these practices have in common?
Messaging (stay in touch, let them know you're available!)
Proactive messaging about safety
"We're concerned about your dental health."
Efficiency ("if you're coming in, let's get it done!")
"The Big Dip" (hygiene scheduling)
The history of dental infection control...why is dentistry ahead of this curve?
How is "on campus" going at Spear Education?
"Live Virtual" seminars...better than in person?
Faculty club round tables...the best value at Spear!

We’ve talked a LOT about the Mr. Thirsty One Step. You probably know that it’s the only combination bite block and suction solution that is 100% single use. You don’t need any special hardware to use Mr. Thirsty One Step. It plugs directly into your high volume suction and you’re good to go! You also probably know that it’s easy to alter to fit any patient. You get hands-free retraction of the cheek and tongue and a SUPER dry field all in one single use package! What you might not know is how well it reduces spatter and aerosols! In fact, a recent study performed by the Dental Advisor indicated that Mr. Thirsty One Step performs more like high volume suction in the hands of a skilled assistant than any other device! If you haven’t tried Mr. Thirsty One Step, we think it’s time you should! Go get yourself a trial kit at dentalhacks.com/mrthirstytrial and see if it doesn’t make your life a lot easier!

The brilliant Dr. Russell Schafer joins Alan to talk about how he uses a 3D printer and digital design to find the middle ground between barely adequate treatment and the full Cadillac. Many times your patients have situations that don't allow for ideal treatment. Russell has found several situations where digital design and printing have made for a cost effective solution that works for his office AND his patients. Whether it's digital dentures, printed provisional crowns or short term orthodontics, in office 3D printing is filling a need that often goes unfilled in our offices.

HOUSEKEEPING: We released the Thanksgiving episode to some users last week. If you heard an opening bit about Thanksgiving last week then you've heard this show. Go back and re-download last week's show and you'll hear about root canal rotary files and video games. Sorry, the management.
It's almost over. We just have to obturate. Is there a dirtier word in dentistry than obturate? Do you need special consent to obturate someone? Did I overdo it and say obturate too many times? Oops... I did it again. Sincerely, Britney P.S. (would obturate)
Highlights include:
We discuss drying the canal and what happens if it doesn't get dry?
1 step or 2 step?
What sealer do we use? Kevin got fancy and went to BC sealer, but Zach is old school with Kerr Tubliseal
Do we use heated gutta percha? Guttacore? Cold GP? Single cone?
How do we sear the gutta percha? Touch and Heat? EBay heated instrument?
Do we bond in cores same day? Spoiler Alert: You bet.
Do we write any prescriptions afterwards? Antibiotic hot takes? Pain meds?
Next week is the final endo episode on complications and procedural mistakes.
Happy Thanksgiving from Kevin and Zach and thanks for listening.
Al is joined by Dr. Zach Meiners to talk about a bunch of tips to help reduce your office overhead! Zach is one of the managers of the Clinical Hacks Facebook group, and one of the co-hosts of the Clinical Hacks Podcast which you should listen to every single time it's released! Here's a few of the things Zach recommends that are just like what you're using, but a lot less $$$!
Zach is the man. Saving us money all while being incredibly good looking. He's a treasure. Hit him up in the Clinical Hacks Facebook group!

Jason and Alan are joined by the incomparable Dr. Gina Dorfman and Dr. Melissa Zettler for a rousing round of "what would you do?" We asked the Dental Hacks Nation to come up with interesting and challenging scenarios for this Brain Trust to kick around and we think you'll like what we've come up with! We discussed:
How to refer, relationships with specialists and how owner dentists need to explain how they want this done to those associates that they're working with
What do you do with people that ask about expensive treatments that you know from history and their monetary situation that they have absolutely zero intention of following through with?
What do you do when a medical doctor tells you to stay in your lane when you want a kid assessed for apnea?
What would you do if a hygiene patient from earlier in the day called the office and wanted to talk to the doctor. When the doc comes to the phone the patient explains that they didn't feel that the hygienist was using proper COVID protocols/PPE?
You’ve diagnosed a cavity clinically and radiographically on the distal of #3. Treatment planned a DOL filling to close the contact which was packing food. As you prepare, you realize that the decay goes quite gingival and placing a direct restorative is going to be a mess. Patient is expecting a filling. What do you do?
What do you do when you find out a team member is sleeping with a patient?
When you identify that a child is a victim of abuse, how do you proceed?
