Jason and Alan had a chance to speak with Dr. Frank Spear and Dr. Gregg Kinzer about dental CE: where it's been and where it's going! The Dental Hacks welcome two luminaries of Dental CE to the show! Dr. Frank Spear and Dr. Gregg Kinzer discuss all things Spear Education. Frank tells some stories about how he started presenting to dentists and how the Spear Center in Scottsdale came about. They also tell the story of how the two of became partners in dental practice. There's a lot to love in this podcast. We talk about the best way to bring new patients into your office ("what level would you like to be seen, Mrs. Smith?") and even how to transition patients you've been seeing for a long time into more comprehensive care. Frank and Gregg are two of the best storytellers in dentistry...you don't want to miss this one! As a special bonus: Dental Hacks listeners can receive $20/month off their Spear Online membership using the promo code: DH169. Check it out at https://www.speareducation.com/dentalhacks! This is a terrific deal on the best online CE anywhere...often referred to as the "gateway drug" into Spear Education! Al talks with his dental school classmate/best friend Dr. Bart Schultz about big case dentistry. Bart has done extensive training in implants and reconstruction through Misch and Spear among others. He's one of the guys who actually does a lot of the big cases that many new dentists aspire to do. Guess what? It ain't all roses! Bart and Al have a wide ranging conversation about big case dentistry, fear of flying and patient communication. |

In a nutshell, this statement is why Jason Smithson is my hero. Also my spirit animal. In this very special edition of the Dental Hacks Daily I had a chance to talk with Dr. Jason Smithson about the rubber dam. Jason is known for his exquisite restorative procedures. And one of the many things that makes him such a fine clinician and teacher is his use of the rubber dam. I spend this episode asking Jason all about it. We discuss:
This episode gives the listener a sample of another new podcast that will be coming out on the Dental Hacks Podcast Network! Coming in May 2019, the "Smithson On..." podcast will be conversations and rants featuring the wit and expertise of Dr. Jason Smithson!

You might remember that we did a round table about endodontics back in episode 223 that featured Dr. Kevin Fryer, Dr. Zach Meiners and Dr. Mac Jones and there was a bit of magic there. These three "regular ass" dentists love talking shop and that's just what you'll hear on the Clinical Hacks podcast! In today's episode we talk with Kevin, Zach and Mac about what they hope to accomplish with the podcast and what we can expect!

They explain how Zirc makes this easy with their ZOBE (Zirc's Box of Organizational Efficiency) product! How great would it be to have a bunch of different organizational products shipped right to your office so you can hold them in your hands and see how they actually feel while getting coached by the organizational experts at Zirc? It's a great idea and you should try it out! You can find out more at dentalhacks.com/zobe!

We've been using a new cement in our offices and it's made by our friends at Bisco. It's called Theracem. It's a dual-cured, calcium and fluoride-releasing, self-adhesive resin cement indicated for luting crowns, bridges, inlays, onlays and posts (prefabricated metal/non-metal/fiber posts). My favorite thing about it is that it delivers a strong bond to zirconia and most substrates with no priming or etching required. It's fluoride and calcium releasing and is pleasantly radioopaque on the x-ray. It's also super easy to clear. It's kind of perfect, really. Go check out Theracem from Bisco at dentalhacks.com/theracem!

Paul's links: Dental Practice Heroes Podcast Links from the show: Our "clinical hack of the week" feature a trick for closed tray implant impressions. You can't beat PTFE (teflon) tape! To keep impression material out of the impression coping ends you can wad teflon up kind of fat and gently pack it into the top. Keeps impression material out and is super easy to remove after you take the impression out of the mouth. Jason also suggests Tak model block from Great Lakes Orthodontics. Mr. Thirsty One Step is a bite block and a tongue guard with built in suction. It's great for dentists and hygienists because it removes water spray, retracts the cheek and tongue and keeps the patient's mouth open all in one easy to use and disposable package. There are several options out there for these kind of mouth guards, so why is Mr. Thirsty better? First, it's all one piece there is nothing to sterilize or clean. Take it out of the package, use it, then toss it. Secondly, the bite block has a little less "give" than it's competitors, and in my hands...that's a plus. You should check out Mr. Thirsty at dentalhacks.com/mrthirsty and use the coupon code "TRIAL10" on the website for $10 off of a Mr. Thirsty One Step trial kit! This is a great deal on a great product, so go check it out!

Alan had a chance to speak with Emily Brayman of Microcopy Dental. Emily talks about her product called "Dentalvation." It's a way for dentists that have ideas for new and innovative products to help develop them into reality. Emily tells the story of an upcoming product from Microcopy called "Proxi-chek." It's a specialized indicating paper that helps dentists mark interproximal contacts prior to cementation of crowns. It's a brilliant little product and a classic "why didn't I think of that." This is an episode that's been a long time in the making! Alan is joined by the co-hosts of "A Tale of Two Hygienists," a podcast focusing on dental hygiene! If you haven't heard the show, you should check it out! We recorded these interviews at the Chicago Midwinter last February and this found footage is pretty great! For the first half of the interview Andrew Johnson and his brother Mike Johnson tell Alan all about how "restorative hygiene" works. This is a style of hygiene practice that you might not be familiar with, but these guys really get it and they've got lots to say about it! Then Michelle joins us to talk about midlevel providers of all types and where dental hygiene fits into all of it. These hygienists are passionate about their profession and they've got some interesting viewpoints! Some links from the show: "A Tale of Two Hygienists" on iTunes This week's Clinical Hack of the Week is from Dr. Brian McGue. He gives us a tip about how to create solid interproximal contacts in posterior composites in rotated or "long reach" situations. He mentioned the PerForm contact instrument by Garrison Dental.
