Welcome to season 1, episode 15 of the Clinical Hacks Podcast This week we gave Mac Jones the week off to build a patio table and instead we talk about sealants. Zach Meiners, Kevin Fryer, and Alan Mead have one thing in common, we all pretty much dislike sealants! What? Aren't they preventing decay? Enjoy what's likely an unpopular take on sealants. Highlights include: - Do sealants prevent decay? - Can sealants "cause" decay? - What conditions should be met for sealants to be effective? - Is adding sealants into your hygiene program a revenue booster? - When did 3 experienced clinicians turn sour on sealants? - How does a microscope user view the sealant restoration? - Is the medium quality sealant the worst restoration? - Glass Ionomer sealants, do they have a place? Fuji Triage

"You get the rough with the smooth." --Dr. Jason Smithson on having a specialty Alan and Jason continue their conversation about specialization. This episode is where we get to the good stuff where we really dig into the pros and cons of specialization and how generalists that long to be known for a particular kind of work might have it wrong! Jason debunks some of Alan's preconceived notions about how having a referral base makes a patient choosing treatment almost automatic. And Alan is mildly crushed. Also we discuss the excruciating problem of having a 20+ year old practice/patient base and the ups and downs of having a "history" with people. Finally, we open the door to a potential next podcast to talk about an ideal way to do group practice.

Dr. Jamison Spencer joins Jason and Alan to talk about sleep medicine and TMD treatment in the dental office. Once you’ve learned some things about sleep apnea you come to see the symptoms and consequences in LOTS of your patients. Bruxism, gastric reflux, TMD and lots of other conditions are correlated with sleep apnea. Dentists are quickly becoming the most likely screeners for this potential deadly condition, and Dr. Jamison Spencer is one of the most sought after lecturers on the subject. Dr. Spencer joins Jason and Alan to explain how to incorporate this treatment into your practice, what symptoms to screen, what gadgets NOT to buy and what diagnoses you shouldn’t be making! Dr. Spencer’s online study club, “The Spencer Study Club” is only open for enrollment a couple times per year, but he’s made it available to the listeners of the Dental Hacks podcast! One thing we've learned about Jason is that he's a great storyteller. Add to that his mastery of restorative dentistry and his knack for teaching it to other dentists and you've got a pretty compelling guy. Our new podcast will feature conversations between Al and Jason (Smithson) on focused topics, most often related to clinical dentistry. I think you'll see that it's a pretty great listen. We're kicking off our first episode with a discussion of science and the somewhat twisted relationship that it has with dentistry. If you have any questions or comments about the episode please email us at info@dentalhacks.com or better still, post it on the Dental Hacks Nation Facebook group! We'd like to welcome Jason to our podcast network and we're glad he's here! |

Dr. John Khademi and Dr. Eric Herbranson join Alan to talk about the state of endodontics, conserving dentin and how we know what we know. I got to know Dr. John Khademi in the mid-2000's from Dental Town. I was introduced to Dr. Eric Herbranson in 2011 at the Academy of Microscope Enhanced Dentistry where he talked about the 3D Tooth Atlas he had created. Both are influential endodontists who have controversial ideas about how we've been treating teeth over the years. Today's episode features a journey from patient based outcomes to case selection, access openings to how we know what we know. There's a fair amount of hero worship here I've been a huge fan of these guys for quite some time. And a bonus...the one and only Dr. David Clark of Bioclear sits down at the end and talks endo! Al talks with his dental school classmate/best friend Dr. Bart Schultz about big case dentistry. Bart has done extensive training in implants and reconstruction through Misch and Spear among others. He's one of the guys who actually does a lot of the big cases that many new dentists aspire to do. Guess what? It ain't all roses! Bart and Al have a wide ranging conversation about big case dentistry, fear of flying and patient communication. |

In a nutshell, this statement is why Jason Smithson is my hero. Also my spirit animal. In this very special edition of the Dental Hacks Daily I had a chance to talk with Dr. Jason Smithson about the rubber dam. Jason is known for his exquisite restorative procedures. And one of the many things that makes him such a fine clinician and teacher is his use of the rubber dam. I spend this episode asking Jason all about it. We discuss:
This episode gives the listener a sample of another new podcast that will be coming out on the Dental Hacks Podcast Network! Coming in May 2019, the "Smithson On..." podcast will be conversations and rants featuring the wit and expertise of Dr. Jason Smithson!

You might remember that we did a round table about endodontics back in episode 223 that featured Dr. Kevin Fryer, Dr. Zach Meiners and Dr. Mac Jones and there was a bit of magic there. These three "regular ass" dentists love talking shop and that's just what you'll hear on the Clinical Hacks podcast! In today's episode we talk with Kevin, Zach and Mac about what they hope to accomplish with the podcast and what we can expect!

Jason and Alan are joined by Nicolle Campion (president) and Kay Hickey (sales specialist) of Zirc. You see, it just so happens that Jason is doing another startup and our friends at Zirc are here to explain that it's never too soon to be planning your clinical workflow and organization! They explain how Zirc makes this easy with their ZOBE (Zirc's Box of Organizational Efficiency) product! How great would it be to have a bunch of different organizational products shipped right to your office so you can hold them in your hands and see how they actually feel while getting coached by the organizational experts at Zirc? It's a great idea and you should try it out! You can find out more at dentalhacks.com/zobe!
