What happens when you pay a company to handle your office's web presence way too much money and they screw it up? You figure out how to do it yourself! Or at least you do if you're Dr. Shawn Van de Vyver. In episode 109 we introduce you to Shawn Van de Vyver, a dentist who understands marketing better than anyone you know and who has learned to harness all the amazing tools available online to create and manage leads as well as automate almost any process you can imagine. He's a unique individual and he let Alan sleep on his couch.

In today's Brain Trust we talk about "herodontics." Have you ever done something at a patient's request that you were pretty sure wasn't going to work? Do you ever find yourself treating a patient that you can just tell you should have sent on their way? The Brain Trust explores this bizarre tendency in some dentists (Alan is guilty, big time). Our Brain Trust features Dr. Brooke Blicher, Dr. Will Wyatt, Dr. Ayesha Zaruhullah and Brain Trust noob Dr. Paul (the Italian Smith) Amato. You'll learn that 1) you aren't the only one with these regrets and 2) how to stop it!

Is preventing cavities as simple as changing diet? Is it all a lack of home care? In episode 108 we welcome back Dr. Pamela Maragliano-Muniz to talk more about what dentists and dental teams can actually do to prevent dental caries!  Her background is unique...and so is she. She's probably the only dental hygienist/prosthodontist you know. Pamela owns Salem Dental Arts in Salem, MA and is a column editor at www.dentistryiq.com as well! She is a featured lecturer on prevention and risk assessment in dentistry.

In the second half of our endodontics focused Brain Trust segment we talk complications, irrigation, obturation and all kinds of good stuff. We feature endodontist Dr. Rebekah Lucier-Pryles from episodes 99 and 100 to engage with general dentists Dr. Mac Jones and Dr. Craig Heins along with your trusty co-hosts. The journey we take helps us understand that endodontists are people, too.

Dr. Pamela Maragliano-Muniz is not your run-of-the-mill prosthodontist. Nope. Not even close. She wanted to be a professional hockey player. But then decided on dental hygiene. After she became a hygienist, she found that she loved teeth so much that she wanted to go back to dental school! Her background is unique...and so is she. Pamela owns Salem Dental Arts in Salem, MA and is a column editor at www.dentistryiq.com as well! She is a featured lecturer on prevention and risk assessment in dentistry. She's got a lot to say about some stuff that some dentists gloss over. Can we really assess patients risks in such a way that we can prevent tooth decay? She sets the record straight in episode 107 of the Dental Hacks!

In our Brain Trust segment we dive a little bit deeper on endodontics. We bring back endodontist Dr. Rebekah Lucier-Pryles from episodes 99 and 100 to engage with general dentists Dr. Mac Jones and Dr. Craig Heins (along with Jason and Alan) on all things endo. We talk hand filing, file choices and even get into some endodontic horror stories (hypochlorite accidents anyone?). If you liked our first trip into endo, you're going to love this!

There are a bunch of dentists that work with their spouse in the dental office. Dr. Mike Melkers is one of them. There are significantly less dentists that use tractors on a regular basis. Again, Dr. Mike Melkers is one of them. Very few dentists have created a disc golf course at their home. Dr. Melkers is one those, too. It's called "Thumper's Hollow." In today's episode, we discuss all this stuff. More importantly, we discuss the things that dentists need to do outside the practice of dentistry to keep themselves sane. You'll learn a few things (what is a catio?) and have a few laughs, guaranteed.

Dr. Melkers returns to teaching this November in Waltham, MA teaching a course called "Occlusionists Now" with Dr. Lane Ochi! If you use the coupon code "HACKS" you'll receive a discount on your registration!

Oil pulling? Figs for healthy teeth? The Brain Trust returns to discuss the craziest things that patients have said to their dentist. Join Dr. Dawn Kulongowski, Dr. David Scardella, Dr. Erin Elliott and Dr. Andy Hayes as they dig into inappropriate patient comments.

In this special episode the Dental Hacks Brain Trust talks CBCT. Specifically, three of the members of the Brain Trust panel explain the features, specifications and decisions that they made in selecting their CBCT machine. This Brain Trust, along with four other "decision trees" will be featured in an insert in the July 2016 issue of Dental Economics. The Dental Hacks worked alongside Dental Economics to help explain some of the decisions that real, wet-fingered (ewwww) dentists make about equipment purchases. If you find this podcast and the insert in Dental Economics useful, please let us know at info@dentalhacks.com!

How do you become better as a dentist? Is it as simple as taking a course? Or is there more to it. That's one of the topics we discuss with Dr. Mike Melkers in episode 105 of the Dental Hacks podcast. Mike is well versed in how we develop our understanding of new concepts. He's a teacher as well as a learner and he discusses the ups and downs of continuing to learn our craft. He also discusses the work he put in to become a master in the AGD this past weekend! Dr. Melkers returns to teaching this November in Waltham, MA teaching a course called "Occlusionists Now" with Dr. Lane Ochi! If you use the coupon code "HACKS" you'll receive a discount on your registration!

In the Brain Trust things get a little lighter when we open with the question: what's the craziest thing a patient has done in your dental chair. Alan is joined by Dr. Dawn Kulongowski, Dr. Andy Hayes, Dr. Erin Elliott and Dr. David Scardella to tell stories that get very inappropriate very quickly.

Dr. Chris Phelps spends most of episode 103 delivering actionable marketing content. Whether it's gift cards for nearby restaurants, wine and cheese parties or car washes he's giving you ideas for TONS of campaigns that you can use to drive new patient flow. He's also the originator of CallTrackerROI, an ingenious service that allows you to track how effective your marketing is. He's also one of the foremost experts on the science of influence. He's even studied directly under Dr. Robert Cialdini PhD, who is essentially the jedi master of influence marketing. All this gives Chris a very interesting and fascinating outlook on why some marketing works and some marketing doesn't. If you loved the actionable items that Chris shared in episode 103 then you're probably going to want to hear more. Here's how you can:

Episode 103's Brain Trust features Dr. Mike Keller, Dr. Dawn Kulongowski and Dr. Melissa Zettler. We continue our discussion of geriatric dentistry. How can you know if your patient is competent to give consent for treatment? How do you handle people whose mouths are falling apart because they can not or will not take care of themselves? You'll also hear Dawn take Alan to task for "bending over backwards" for those patients that won't allow you to tip them back far enough to work on them. It's podcasting gold, I tell you!

  • Why it's best if you don't have to be brilliant every time you come to the office and what Mike wants to do to make life more consistent
  • How do temporaries make everyone's life a little harder?
  • How do they choose speakers and performers for Siroworld?

  • Should you feel bad if you aren't doing a bunch of onlays?

How can you improve outcomes in your endodontics? How do you know if your specialists are doing a good job for you? Our second interview with Dr. Rebekah Pryles and Dr. Brooke Blicher is a deep dive in some of the procedural nuances that endodontists are using daily to get great outcomes. Should you be using hand files more? Are you irrigating long enough? What sealers are they using? You'll here it all from a couple of very approachable specialists. Be sure to check out their recently released book: Endodontics Review: A Study Guide. I bought it...it looks like a textbook but reads like one of those "for dummies" books. I love how easy it is to navigate to what you want and it's written to be engaging, not boring!

The Brain Trust expands upon more interesting dental business models. We spend a hilarious half hour with Dr. Melissa Zettler, Dr. Frank Clayton and Dr. Brent Young talking about "emergency only" clinics, "walk in" hygiene clinics and a whole new beast that allows dentists to bid for the the kind of patients they want in their office! Almost 100 episodes in and the Dental Hacks haven't done much of a deep dive into endo...until now! Dr. Brooke Blicher and Dr. Rebekah Pryles are endodontists that work together in White River Junction, Vermont. Not only that...they're authors of a recently released endodontics text that you should take a look at: Endodontics Review: A Study Guide. Although they wrote it for those attempting to be board certified in endodontics we think it's pretty appropriate for anyone interested in taking a look at evidence based root canal treatment! The Hacks start this two part interview by discussing endodontic education as well as diagnosis and treatment planning.

The Brain Trust welcomes back Dr. Frank Clayton, Dr. Brent Young and Dr. Melissa Zettler to take a hilarious look at alternative business models in dentistry. Have you ever thought about bringing specialists into your office? Will specialists stop having brick and mortar offices any more? How about "emergency only" clinics? They Brain Trust hashes out some interesting and entertaining topics in episode 99.

Communication in dentistry can make all the difference between successful treatment and compromise. In episode 98 of the Dental Hacks podcast we continue talking with oral surgeon and podcaster Dr. Russell Kirk about how dentists and specialists can increase communication in an effort to deliver better and more consistent care. Specialists have to deal with so many different styles of communication from dentist to dentist. Some old school dentists are strictly referral pad guys while technically savvy dentists can send digital images and instant messages. You'll hear what makes a specialist happiest from their referrals and how you can get on your specialists' "nice" list! Be sure to check out Russell's podcast, "the Business of Dentistry" on iTunes and his website!

"I'll just leave this here..."
"I'll just leave this here..."

In the Brain Trust we continue talking about surgical complications in the dental office. Dr. Lance Timmerman, Dr. Shawn Van de Vyver and Dr. Russell Kirk tell war stories of their experiences and the experiences of some of their "friends." Have you ever seen a wound in the floor of the mouth gape like the belly of a creature in the "Empire Strikes Back?" This is probably the funniest Brain Trust we've heard in a long time...you're going to love it!

Dr. Russell Kirk is an oral surgeon from Lebanon, TN. He's also a podcaster. His podcast, "The Business of Dentistry," focuses on helping dentists take a practical look at running their small business. Jason and Alan had the pleasure of meeting Russell in person during their recent trip to Nashville. They sat down to talk with Russell about how oral surgeons are trained, his experience as a dentist in the military and how student debt is affecting the choices that new dentists are making during school and after graduation.

We also feature Dr. Kirk in our Brain Trust segment. He joins Jason, Alan, Dr. Lance Timmerman and Brain Trust newcomer Dr. Shawn Van de Vyver to talk about surgical complications in dentistry. We recently had a listener email to ask us to talk about our experiences with paresthesia because she was having troubles with it and she wanted to hear what some other dentists had experienced. We think this will help a lot!

You might be surprised how hard it is to prevent embezzlement in the dental office! As David Harris of Prosperident explains, the conventional solutions that everyone thinks of often don't do the trick. Individual log ins to practice management software are great, but easy to get around. Cameras and keyloggers are fine as long as you know when to look! So what's the real tip off? Behavior. David and the Dental Hacks dig into what kinds of behavior you might look for that could give away an embezzling employee. Plus, David is offering Prosperident's embezzlement risk assessment for free if you use the code: "dentalhacks."

The Brain Trust gets serious about charting in episode 96. That sounds boring but I promise you it's not! What kind of templates are available? What kind of red flags should you look for with regard to patients you might want to chart in more detail? How do you avoid getting "landed on?" All questions that Dr. Lance Timmerman, Dr. Melissa Zettler and Dr. Richard Low consider in detail!

Embezzlement is a problem in dentistry. David Harris of Prosperident isjoins the Dental Hacks in episode 95 to tell us just how big aproblem it is. David thinks that dentists are particularlysusceptible because we're an altruistic bunch that isn't very goodat weeding out the criminal element when we hire. His solution:you've got to think like a criminal. Every dentist needs to hearhis message and the Dental Hacks deliver in a powerful andentertaining way. Plus, David is offering Prosperident's embezzlement risk assessment for freeif you use the code: "dentalhacks."

The Brain Trust takes on a different difficulty that dentistsface. Dr. Melissa Zettler, Dr. Lance Timmerman and Dr. Richard Lowjoin Alan to talk about charting. How much of charting is done toCYA? Are some people more likely to get in trouble for chartingthan others? The Brain Trust's take on a dry subject is at timeshilarious and always powerful. Also, if you have suggestions aboutthorough charting tips, we want to hear them! (Brain Trust startsat 47:40)

Can a "non-insurance" practice be insurance friendly? Can a practice that takes many insurance still be free from their constraints?

In this special episode of the Dental Hacks podcast we feature a "debate" between Gary Takacs and Dr. Tarun Agarwal. We think you'll find the conversation enlightening no matter how much or how little insurance your practice takes!

Should your web guy be in jail? Are they charging you way too much for way too little? In our second round with Jeff Gladnick, CEO of Great Dental Websites we take a look at some of the crap that goes on with some dental web designers. Jeff answers a few other questions for us:

  • who should be creating content for your website?
  • how much is too much to be paying for monthly web hosting and updating?
  • who owns your website content?
  • how do you reach that perfect level where the jokes are all landing?

In the Brain Trust we continue our conversation with our "all associate" Brain Trust members: Dr. Sara Fam, Dr. John Syrbu, Dr. Ayesha Zahurullah and Dr. James Raymond. They tell us how they found the associateships that they're in now and give some really good insight to "poor pathetic dental students" that may be weighing their options for graduation. Marketing your dental practice starts with a website. Your presence on the internet is as necessary as the Yellow Pages was decades ago. So how do you know what makes a great dental website? You ask Jeff Gladnick, CEO of Great Dental Websites! In episode 93 the Dental Hacks learn a little bit about how Jeff got into creating website for dentists (he's got a family full of them) and how Great Dental Websites differs from other dental website companies. We also talk about the long tradition of sketchy dudes creating crappy websites for dentists and charging way too much for them and how a dentist can avoid these pitfalls!

In the Brain Trust we have a conversation with dentists that are currently in associateships. We talk with Dr. John Syrbu, Dr. Sarah Fam, Dr. James Raymond and Dr. Ayesha Zahurullah about their current associateship as well as a few past associateships that didn't work out so well. They give some valuable thoughts on what makes a great owner doctor and what makes one that you just can't work with.

Get your notepad and get ready to soak it all in!

We continue our Brain Trust with three of the speakers at the upcoming "Practice on Fire Live" conference coming up in Nashville, TN on May 13-14. Ah, the schedule. The dentist's best friend or worst nightmare. Today's guest on the Dental Hacks podcast is Lois Banta, a consultant and speaker who gives a ton of ideas of how to whip your schedule into shape! Some of the highlights include:

  • who you should and shouldn't "pre-appoint" for 6 month recalls (hint: it's not everyone!)
  • how do you change the person's mind about cancelling an appointment?
  • how to create "the most reliable patient in the practice"
  • how do you know you've got the right consultant in your office?

Lois is awesome. You'll be hanging on her every word and she's going to give you ideas on how to fix that schedule!

You've probably heard of Practice on Fire Live. You know, the two day seminar on May 13-14 featuring a bunch of great speakers talking about a wide variety of topics from clinical excellence to how to run your business better. Today's Brain Trust features three of the masterminds behind this incredible seminar: Dr. Graham Dersley, Dr. David Maloley (aka: the Relentless Dentist) and Dental Hacks favorite Dr. Cory Glenn! Composite resin is hands down the most versatile dental restorative material. But are you using it to it's potential? Dr. Buddy Mopper thinks that we aren't! Dr. Mopper is one of the founders of Cosmedent and he's got a few things he wants to tell you. First, where's the microfill? What happened to this material and why don't dentists use it much any more? In episode 90 Buddy give a primer on the types of composites and how we can use them better. He also goes "inside baseball" about how dental products are developed and how Cosmedent brings new stuff to the market.

The Brain Trust features Dr. Jason Smithson and Dr Buddy Mopper talking about some of the ways they differ in technique. You'll hear to of the biggest names in composite continuing education describe the pros and cons of their techniques and why they do things the way they do. Things get a little exciting when they answer a listener question about composites in compules vs. syringes. "Put that in your pipe and smoke it!"

It's not very often that you get to speak to a living legend. A few weeks ago, Alan had that chance. Dr. Buddy Mopper is a spectacularly talented cosmetic dentist, educator and founder of Cosmedent. In our interview with Buddy we talk to someone who's been practicing dentistry since before cosmetic solutions were readily available to restore teeth. Buddy talks about life before composite and why he thinks composite is still the most versatile material for restoring teeth!

The only thing better than an interview with Dr. Buddy Mopper is a Brain Trust segment including Dr. Buddy Mopper and Dental Hacks favorite Dr. Jason Smithson! These two giants of cosmetic dentistry start a discussion about composite and techniques that ranges from serious to silly. Some things they completely agree on and somethings they beg to differ! This is a very special Brain Trust segment not to be missed!

  • What kinds of treatment does she recommend?
  • How does she bill the patient's medical insurance?

Yelling down the hall is very 80's. Walkie-talkies...late 90's into the "early oughts." It's time to bring your intra office communications into the "twenty-teens!" Hardware options from Apple watches to tablets to the computer in every operatory makes the old technlogies seem obsolete. We talk with the leader in intra-office communications about the software he invented to make every office run more smoothly: OperaDDS. We get inside the brain of a dentist/software designer who put this technology together to improve the patient experience in his office and now it's available to everyone! Go check out OperaDDS and get special pricing using coupon code "Hacks." I know...very original.

The Brain Trust spends a little time talking about the advantages of being a member of Smile Source. Then the Brain Trust switches gear. Dr. Melissa Zettler tells us a little bit about a Google review that took her by surprise and what can you do for a bad/unfair Google review. (Answer: not much at all). HIPAA. It's meant to protect our patients' confidential information. But the application of this regulation can make you crazy. What do we need to do? Are you doing it right? Enter Dr Bryan Laskin. He's a successful Minnesota dentist and software developer who wondered "can't we make this easier?" Bryan helps explain what dental offices should be doing to follow the regulation. Then we move to intra office communication, and this is where Bryan's amazing creation, "OperaDDS" can help. He tells us how and why he developed the software and why it could help you deliver efficient and exceptional care for your patients. If OperaDDS is something you think would work for you, be sure to use promo code: "HACKS" to let them know that your heard it from us!

Our Brain Trust segment features Dr. Melissa Zettler and Dr. Lance Timmerman, two members of an interesting group called "Smile Source." What is Smile Source? Part buying club, part study club and part personal insurance fee negotiator, this group brings a lot of the advantages of DSOs to independent dentists. Dr. Mike Keller join Alan and Jason in finding out whether Smile Source is right for their practices.

Episode 83 continues our discussion with Dr. David Clark. David has spent a career trying to teach dentists to look at composite restorations differently. His minimally invasive concepts have been published all over the place and his Bioclear matrix system is helping dentists remove less healthy tooth structure and giving options besides full preparation for crowns. In this episode Dr. Clark discusses:

  • What advantages does heating composite give us?
  • Does heating composite damage it?
  • Why injection mold instead of layering?
  • What happens if you don't remove biofilm before bonding?

Also helping us with our interview is Dental Hacks regular Dr. Arthur Volker who is also an instructor with Bioclear.

In our Brain Trust segment we continue our discussion about crown and onlay preparation.  Dr. Arthur Volker, Dr. Lance Timmerman and Brain Trust virgin Dr. Will Wyatt dig in to their individual processes and armamentarium to deliver some really good stuff. Some of the products discussed:

Dr. David Clark is a pioneer of sorts. He started using a dental operating microscope long before they were "a thing" for restorative dentists. Once he started routinely using a microscope, he realized that how we handled composite resin needed improvement. So he set about to change the way dentistry understands and uses composite resin. In the first half of our fascinating talk with Dr. Clark we talk about:

In our Brain Trust segment we take an entertaining look at the onlay vs. crown debate. Dr. Arthur Volker, Dr. Lance Timmerman and Brain Trust newbie Dr. Will Wyatt discuss the how and why of tooth preparation and materials selection. You'll hear about:

Our guest for episode 81 needs no introduction. Dr. Rick Workman of Heartland Dental practically invented large group practices, and today you're going to hear how! We start with Rick's humble beginnings on the farm and move all the way to today's modern DSO practices, and I think you'll find the story pretty fascinating! Along the way you'll hear:

  • What is a "Dental Support Organization" or DSO?
  • What do DSOs do and what don't they do?
  • Is a DSO practice right for you?
  • How have DSOs changed the practice of dentistry and what will they look like in the future?

Most dentists dream of a practice where they are in the back doing clinical dentistry and their office runs like a finely tuned machine without their input. That's where our guest, Sandy Pardue, comes in. Whether it's rescuing appointments from cancellations, avoiding embezzlement or helping the front office run more smoothly, Sandy and her business Classic Practice Resources can help. We had Dr. Dawn Kulongowski, Dental Hacks favorite and Classic Practice client to help with our interview. We think you'll find it valuable!

Jason and Alan met at a course that Dr. Jason Smithson was giving in Chicago in 2013. They always knew that they'd like to have him on the podcast because he's an amazing dentist and a very good teacher. What they didn't realize is what a good story teller he is!

In episode 78 of the Dental Hacks podcast we give Jason a chance to tell his story from quiet and mild-mannered restorative wunderkind to international lecturer. If you've been on Facebook or DentalTown, you've probably seen the hyper-realistic composite dentistry that Jason has been posting since the early 2000's. Now you get to hear from him how he started doing it, how he got noticed and how you can up your composite dentistry game!

Dr. Lance Timmerman was the first guest on the Dental Hacks podcast. Since then, he's started a bunch of podcasts: The Whole Tooth, Smile Source Radio and my favorite "Totally Oral." He interviewed me for the Totally Oral podcast recently about an article I wrote in Dental Economics about the ethics for Search Engine Optimization. I got his permission to post it as a special episode for Dental Hacks listeners...just before Christmas! We talked about SEO ethics, TSA precheck, blogging and what kind of marketing works.

With today's current diagnostic criteria the prevalence of autism in children is 1 in 68. 1 in 42 for boys. What does that mean for dentists? We're going to need to understand austism and learn to treat them in our offices.

Dr. Jacob Dent is a dentist in Sugarland, TX that teaches other dentists how to help families and individuals dealing with autism with their dental health. In episode 77, Dr. Dent and Alan discuss strategies for treating people on the autism spectrum in the office. More importantly, both Jacob and Alan have children on the autism spectrum and they discuss how the diagnosis affected them, how it's changed their life and how it's changed the way they work with children and adults on the autism spectrum.

Also, at the end of episode 77 the Hacks describe some of the amazing content that they have in store for 2016 and announce that they'll be "dark" for the month of December while they retool the show!

In episode 74 we focus on helping dentists become owners. Practice owners are more likely to do well financially than associates and ownership allows flexibility that being an associate or employee will never have. Jason Wood is a dental attorney at Wood and Delgado specializing in dental business transactions like finding and buying a practice. In episode 74 he explains how to find the ideal practice to purchase, discusses how dentistry is a perfect career for women and what dentistry might look like in the future! Episode 74 features a really great discussion of clinical delegation in the dental office. The ugly truth is that sometimes dentists need lawyers. Often we need lawyers when we don't even know we need lawyers. Jason Wood, a lawyer for dentists, is here to help you understand when you do and don't need a lawyer. Jason handles all kinds of dental business transactions...the big ones. Partnerships, associateships, purchasing and selling dental practices. If you've spent any time on DentalTown you probably know of him. He's a partner at Wood and Delgado and in episode 73 we talk about some of the legal mistakes that dentists make:

  • Attempting an associateship when there's really not enough money for an associateship
  • Doing a startup in poor demographics
  • Buying a house before you buy a practice
  • Not negotiating associate compensation

In this week's Brain Trust segment we pick up our conversation with Dr. Art Volker and international dentists Dr. Serhat Koken of Turkey and Dr. Andrew Chandrapal from the UK. In the second half of our discussion we dig deep into the roots of how they've become the amazing clinicians that they are. At the root of this is a web group/Facebook group called Style Italiano. This and several private groups that encourage excellence and posting cases have taken their clinical successes to new heights!

Bob Sommers told us about asking for reviews in the last episode, but he REALLY knows how to generate referrals. His "5 Star Review System" works well for both. But he strongly feels that the referrals in generates is the real magic. How comfortable are you asking for referrals? Do you have a way to make it easy? Bob talks about how create a mostly automatic system to generate a constant flow of new patients primed to love you and the service you provide! Remember if you try the 5 Star Review System but sure to let them know you heard about it on the Dental Hacks for $50 off the set up fee!

Have you ever wondered what it's like to be a dentist in another country? Dr. Art Volker from episode 60 is a fan of high end dentistry and he's found that some of the most amazing dentistry is being done in other countries. At his suggestion we've decided to feature some international dentists in the Brain Trust. Art and Alan talk to Dr. Serhat Koken of Istanbul, Turkey and Dr. Andrew Chandrapal near London, UK. Both Serhat and Andrew teach cosmetic and restorative dentistry in their respective countries and are beginning to teach internationally. We discuss the similarities and differences in the educational systems, ways of practicing, taking continuing education among other things. Everyone wants reviews in Google, Yelp and all the rest. And everyone always says, "the best way to get reviews on Google is to ask for them." Sure. Sounds great, but how do you do it? Who should ask? When do you ask?

Bob Sommers from bestlocalreviews.com created the "5 Star Review System." He knows the best way to ask for reviews. He has research to back up his claims. And he tells you exactly how to ask. In our interview with Bob Sommers we do a deep dive on how reviews work and the very best way to get them.

In our Brain Trust segment we talk about all the different ways think about new patients. We spend a little time talking about what we consider a "new patient." Is a patient that enters your practice as an emergency a "new patient?" Or are new patients only the ones who allow you to do a comprehensive exam? Listen to perennial favorites Dr. Matt Standridge, Dr. Melissa Zettler and Dr. Lance Timmerman as they weigh in on what constitutes a new patient.

Dr. Scott Ganz has been scanning patients with CTs since the 1980's. When you were playing Pitfall on your Atari 2600, he was 3D printing mandibles. I'm not kidding.

In the second half of our interview with the amazing Dr. Scott Ganz he tells us about how CBCT technology and 3D printing has developed and changed through is career. He walks  you through some of the earliest uses of 3D imaging in dentistry in some pretty incredible stories! Then we shift gears a little bit to hear about how international dentists are on the cutting edge of this technology and maybe, just maybe, how the U.S. needs to catch up!

The Brain Trust digs into the new patient experience. You'll hear Dr. Lance Timmerman, Dr. Melissa Zettler and (eventually) Dr. Matt Standridge talk about their process for bringing new patients into their office. Whether you bring them through hygiene or do a comprehensive exam you'll walk away with some pretty great tips on making a great first impression with new patients!

  • What do recent mergers and acquisitions of dental companies mean when it comes to the future of CBCT and dental implants?
  • Is CBCT the standard of care in implant dentistry?
  • What's the history of using CBCT technology in dentistry?

Dr. Ganz is a visionary and shares some great information in today's episode!

The Brain Trust discusses cars. All kinds of stuff about cars? What are they driving? Do they buy use their cars for business? Leasing or buying? You'll hear some great stories and ideas from a panel of Brain Trust favorites: Dr. Frank Clayton, Dr. Lance Timmerman and Dr. Tammy Bailey!

"My goal was to open an office where we could offer every service available dentally that would be convenient and affordable for everybody to come in."

In episode 67 we continue our conversation with Dr. Dennis Frazee. He's a relatively new grad. Like 2012 new grad. His startup is growing like crazy and he tells us about his keys to his success. First, he tells us a bit about how he chose his location and how important that ended up being. Secondly, he sings the praises of being able to sedate patients in his office safely and reliably. Last, he tells us where he focused his time and money (and how he financed it) on CE. This interview is packed with so many pearls you might as well make a necklace out of it!

In the Brain Trust we continue discussing our experiences with customer service failures and how we can apply these lessons in our own business. A couple high points:

  • There needs to be a specialist that helps arrange financing and best deals on equipment purchasing. If someone would do that and help save dentists money and headaches, they will make themselves VERY valuable.
  • Are all website design companies shady?
  • Why is there so much turnover in the dental sales industry?

Be sure to check out this video from listener Dr. Nicholas Miller! He took us up on our Youtube video challenge from a couple weeks back and we think you should check out his video!

You can see his whole channel here!

In our "Go Hack Yourself" segment we feature:

Dr. Dennis Frazee is a general dentist in Moorseville, Indiana. He's a relatively recent graduate...2012. He started a scratch practice soon after finishing dental school. And he's killing it. KILLING it! For such a humble guy, he has an amazing story and a lot of tips for anyone interested in startup practices, incorporating technology in the practice or even what CE to take right after graduation to help jump start your dental career! He talks about handling student debt as well has how to finance a startup as a new graduate. He's funny and informative. That's what makes him a terrific DentalHacks interview!

Episode 66 also features our first "all male" Brain Trust. Trust me, it's not as hot as it sounds. We feature Dr. Matt Standridge, Dr. Mike Keller, Jason and Alan talking about customer service. Specifically, customer service toward dentists. Did it end up as kind of a bitch session? Yes. Is it entertaining and enlightening? Yes. I think you'll find something you relate to here!

Posterior composites are a mainstay of general dentists. A lot of us do them all day long and we're comfortable. Then we run across case presentations on DentalTown or Facebook that make us rethink our approach. Some dentists have created techniques to take posterior composites from "just a filling" to full blown dental porn. In episode 60 we get to talk to three of these dentists!Art's dental porn

Dr. Art Volker, Dr. Matt Costa and Dr. Stephen Kuzmak are three young clinician's who have committed to better composite techniques. In today's episode, you'll hear about what inspired them, how they learned these techniques and everything you need to know to follow their path.

The best part about these amazing dentists is that they are accessible. You'll hear how funny and approachable they are and you'll learn hear about the course they're offering in October 2015. Steve's composite porn

How badly did you want to go to dental school? How many rejections would it have taken for you to decide dental school wasn't for you? Or were you like Dr. Mark Costes and wouldn't take no for an answer?

Today's episode features Dr. Mark Costes, a succesful multiple practice owner, dental practice coach and entrepreneur. He tells us about some of the challenges he had to overcome to become a dentist and how he's leveraged his dental training to become much more than just a practicing dentist. Case in point...Jason had Dr. Costes analyze his practice and talked about where you might decrease overhead (hint: dental supplies and lab fees are a pet peeve of his!).

Dr. Costes is also a dental podcaster and you can find his show, The Dentalpreneur Podcast on iTunes or on his website: www.truedentalsuccess.com. We're fans of what he's doing for the profession and we think you will be too!

This might be the most important episode of the DentalHacks podcast that we've ever done. In today's episode we interview Dr. Roy Shelburne. Dr. Shelburne has become a rock star on the speaking circuit because of his experience being prosecuted by the federal government for fraudulent billing for dental services. He spent 19 months in prison for things that you may be unknowingly doing in your practice.

Dr. Shelburne speaks all over the country helping dentists with their record keeping in an effort to avoid the life changing consequences he experienced. You'll hear these questions answered:

  • do you understand "intent to defraud?"
  • how can you establish that a treatment is "medically necessary?"
  • what systems should you add to your record keeping to avoid trouble?
  • how do you set up audits in your office to catch billing and record keeping mistakes?
  • why should we get rid of paper charts once and for all?

Dentists, you need to listen to this. But maybe more importantly your team really needs to hear this. Dr. Shelburne can help you bring your documentation to a level that avoids legal problems.

The key to local search is reviews. Good reviews not only get you in that coveted "7 pack" on Google, but new patients read reviews that your patients write, and often choose based on excellent reviews! But every dentist who has tried to get reviews, particularly Google reviews, knows that it's not easy. In today's episode, local search rock star Darren Shaw offers more tips on crushing local search and specifically explains the new "reputation builder" tool offered by Whitespark. Whitespark has offered a special code for DentalHacks listeners. Use the code "dentalhacks15" at checkout and you'll receive discounts on various Whitespark products! A few topics we talk with Darren about:

  • What does Darren mean by "be the answer" as a strategy?
  • How does content creation make a difference in local search?
  • Why should your website be created on Wordpress?
  • How important is mobile (rhymes "go mile" when Darren pronounces it!)?
  • How hard is it to change your website to mobile friendly?
  • How often should you update your website's design?
  • How can you get your patients to leave great reviews for your office?

Our Brain Trust segment features frank discussion of treating team members, family and friends. What's fair? What's the right way to do it? You'll hear what works from our Brain Trust panel! Paper Napkin Marketing. Maybe you've never heard of them. But you will. In episode 51 of the DentalHacks podcast we talk with one of the founders of this innovative and completely different kind of dental marketing company. I first met Todd Murray on Facebook. He's a listener and a fan of the show and his first line to me was:

"I wanted to take a moment and introduce Paper Napkin Marketing and share with you the best dental commercial you’ve ever seen. I guarantee it!"

I was intrigued, saw the commercial, and immediately knew he had to be a guest on the DentalHacks. We talk about dental marketing and how he came to use his marketing skills and experience in the dental field and we discuss some specific problems that dentists face in marketing.

The Brain Trust segment continues our discussion about referring patients to specialists, bringing specialists into your office. One of the best tangents that the Brain Trust takes this week is how not to take your patient's hangups so personally. Very good stuff!

What kind of sedation does he recommend? What's the recommended procedure for pulpotomies? The DentalHacks deliver on bread and butter pediatric dentistry tips in this episode! Be sure to check out pediatricdentalce.com for dates of Josh's courses!

The Brain Trust returns in episode 50 discussing what, when and how we refer to specialists. Join Dr. Lance Timmerman, Dr. Melissa Zettler, Dr. Dawn Kulongowski, Dr. Frank Clayton and (eventually) Dr. Tarun Agarwal as they talk about how they work with specialist. In episode 49 the DentalHacks are trying something a little different. We've gotten feedback from a few listeners that they would prefer an entire long form interview on the show instead of splitting them over more than one show. So for those folks, we're trying it out. And there's no one better to do a deep dive with than Dr. Rella Christensen.

Rella Christensen was one of the founders of Clinical Research Associates (now TRAC). They've essentially been the "Consumers Reports" for dentistry for the better part of 40 years and you won't find anyone more knowledgeable on dentistry and dental materials than Rella. Our interview shows her kind demeanor as well as her no nonsense treatment of the data. She's going to change some minds with her discussion of modern crown and bridge materials, particularly monolithic zirconia and she's probably going to ruffle some feathers when she talks about enamel remineralization protocols and how everything we think we know about remineralization is wrong!

Oh...and don't get her started about sugar.

This is a really good interview with one of the smartest people in dentistry. Drink it all in, DentalHacks listeners!

Jason Lipscomb wrote the book on Social Media for Dentists. No...seriously. He wrote the book on it. He knows a little something about Facebook and how to use it for your dental practice. Alan Mead writes blogs and has been since 2008. Howard Farran said, "I actually think the best blogger in America is Alan Mead..." So, there's that. What I'm saying is that your humble hosts have a little something to say about social media!

The DentalHacksIn today's episode, we talk about how your office can have an authentic presence online, whether it's Facebook, Linkedin, an office blog or Twitter. We cover some strategies you can use today to improve your personal or office social media footprint.

Our Brain Trust segment features an all star line up of panelists: Dr. Tammy Bailey, Dr. Frank Clayton, Dr. Melissa Zettler and Dr. Matthew Standridge. Episode 45 of the DentalHacks podcast features Justin Ditkofsky of Cirrus Consulting Group talking about dental office leasing. If you only listen to one podcast this year...it should be this one! Dentists can get in a lot of trouble with commercial leases and most of the time we don't even know it's happening! Before you sign a lease or renegotiate a current lease, take a listen to Justin and make sure you have all the information you need to avoid making a costly mistake!

In the second half of the Brain Trust's discussion of posterior composites we focus on heated composites, composite placement instruments and composite matrix systems. You'll hear about some new matrix rings created to work in all the toughest situations (can you say "nubbin?") Best of all, you'll hear Dr. Rich Rosenblatt get all wound up discussing repairing light composite contacts. Don't miss this Brain Trust!

Chris-Salierno-imageHave you ever been stuck in "paralysis by analysis?" Then you should listen to episode 44 of the DentalHacks! In episode 44, Chris Salierno shares more about his responsibilities as editor-in-chief at Dental Economics. Then he goes on to tell us about passive ownership of a dental practice vs. active ownership as well as his thoughts about the future of dentistry and dental reimbursement.

Then, the Brain Trust takes on posterior composites. Dr. Melissa Zettler, Dr. Rich Rosenblatt, Jason and Alan dig in to everyone's favorite procedures. How are they deciding what's appropriate for a direct restoration vs. indirect? What materials are they using? How do they prep teeth? Is a discussion about bonding agents more controversial than a discussion of religion? We cover it all from soup to nuts!

The Brain Trust starts out asking: who is the best person in the office is to talk about money and schedule appointments? Then we move into the ever-controversial topic of hygienists and diagnosing disease and finally we end up talking about hygiene recall exams and treatment planning in the real world. Dr. David Hornbrook was on the ground floor with the cosmetic dentistry revolution. In today's episode he discusses what it's like to be on the cutting edge of teaching dentists cosmetic dentistry and how it's changed over the years. From PFM crowns to minimally invasive veneers, he's seen it all and tells an interesting story of where he thinks the profession is heading. Recently David began working with Keating Dental Arts as the Director of Clinical Education and Technology and in episode 40 he gave us links to all sorts of materials and cementation guides that he has produced.

In today's Brain Trust segment we bring on 3 favorites: Dr. Tammy Bailey, Dr. Matt Standridge and Dr. Brent Young to talk about treatment planning and getting the most out of your hygiene recall exams. To celebrate the 40th episode of the DentalHacks podcast we feature an interview with the incomparable Dr. David Hornbrook! Dr. Hornbrook is a founder of the Las Vegas Institute, PAC-live and the Hornbrook Group. He's a wet fingered dentist and influential dental educator who has mentored thousands of dentists in his career.

Also, he answers email. Which seems like a silly thing to mention except that his approachable manner makes him one of the most popular dental educators today! HornbrookHeadshot

Most recently David has begun working with Keating Dental Arts as the Director of Clinical Education and Technology and we discussed some of the new educational offerings that David will be involved with at Keating. From there, we talked about communicating with the lab and the inevitable conflict that happens between lab technicians and dentists. Is it the lab tech's place to tell you that your impression sucks? Do you want to hear it? From there we moved into discussing digital impressions and where dental technology is heading.

We finish up our 3 part Brain Trust series recorded live in Chicago in Dawn Kulongowski's hotel room (if you must know). We finish up our discussion with how to get paid. Tarun discusses his implementation of in house financing and wonders why you haven't taken advantage of this amazing option in your office! (For more details, enjoy our DentalHacks special on in house financing here!) So don't miss Dr. Rich Rosenblatt, Dr. Tarun Agarwal, Dr. Tammy Bailey and Dr. Linc Harris as they weigh in!

What is your comfort zone? At what point do you start to get nervous in patient treatment? Laying a flap? Removing bone? Finding the MB2? Sinus lifts? Every dentist has their own limits, but where do these limits start? Dr. Darin O'Bryan is a wet fingered clinician and CEREC educator. If you saw his schedule, you might think he's the hardest working man in show business! Darin teaches many of the CEREC Accept courses outside of Scottsdale for CEREC Doctors and it just so happens that he's a classmate of DentalHacks host Alan Mead. In this episode, Darin and Al catch up on the cool stuff that he's gotten into since dental school including an interesting discussion on denturists in Oregon and a crossover discussion on mid-level providers!

Episode 36 features the Brain Trust breaking some new ground! The Brain Trust decides that we're just going to have a good, old fashioned "bitch session." We're tired of it and we're not going to take it any more! We cover being sick at work, vaccinations, antibiotic prophylaxis and antibiotic overuse in dentistry. What starts out as complaining ends up being a pretty awesome discussion! Episode 36 also marks the first "ladies night" Brain Trust where we feature women only as guests! You'll hear favorites Dr. Dawn Kulongowski, Dr. Tammy Bailey and Dr. Tiffany Lee weigh in. Don't even think of missing it!

Laura Hatch can help your front desk collect more money, reduce patient cancellations and failures and fill your schedule. #notkidding In episode 35 we talk about some specific scenarios where the training videos produced by Front Office Rocks can help.

10 years from now, dentistry will look like... That's what the Brain Trust is discussing in episode 35. In this little time capsule we wonder if we'll have any more or less specialties in dentistry and how independent private practice may look like in 10 years.

So how do you train your front desk staff? It's not like you know how to do all that stuff. Nor do you have time to learn it. That's where Laura Hatch comes in. Laura is the founder of Front Office Rocks, an online training site specific to dental front offices. In episode 34 we talk to Laura about how she became a front office rock star (FORS) and how she wants to help dentists create practices with office systems that run like a well oiled machine!

What do you think dentistry will look like in 10 years? That's the question we asked the Brain Trust in episode 34. Dr. Lance Timmerman and Dr. Melissa Zettler join Jason and Alan to talk about what the future of dentistry looks like and where we'll be. (Hint: Timmerman mentions real estate. Twice.)

In today's episode we continue our discussion with dental coach/consultant/practice owner/podcaster Gary Takacs! Gary talks about why it is so hard to keep new and beneficial changes going in your office from the voice of experience! He's both a consultant helping with the changes and a practice owner dealing with similar difficulties in his own practice! Be sure to catch Gary's podcast, "The Thriving Dentist Show!"

The Brain Trust continues our  discussion about practice systems. Dr. Tammy Bailey, Dr. Frank Clayton, Dr. Melissa Zettler and Dr. Brent Young do a little complaining, a little laughing and a little bit of inventing! Toward the end of our segment we invent a potentially cool way to make small changes in your office and coin the term "microconsulting."

In today's episode we talk with fellow podcaster and practice management coach/consultant, Gary Takacs! Gary's podcast is "The Thriving Dentist Show" and has over 150 episodes and has been ongoing since 2011! We talk about podcasts: what he listens to and how he got started. Then we move onto his practice. Gary is part owner of a dental practice in Arizona. He talks a little about how he and his dentist partner found a "fixer upper" practice and turned it into the practice that they wanted. It's very interesting to hear how a practice management consultant literally built his own "dental test kitchen" to benefit his clients!

The Brain Trust features a discussion about practice systems. What are they? Why does it seem so hard to implement them? Dr. Tammy Bailey, Dr. Frank Clayton, Dr. Melissa Zettler and Dr. Brent Young discuss their own experience with developing and implementing office systems. It sounds kind of dry, right? Not when the Brain Trust does it!

In episode 30 we continue our interview with Dr. Barry Glassman. Dr. Glassman is a dentist and educator who gave up general practice to focus on treating patients with craniofacial pain and sleep disorders. We spend most of the interview talking about occlusion. Does occlusion cause disease? Does it cause pain? Does it really even matter that  much?

The Brain Trust continues it's decidedly NSFW conversation about analogies that we use to explain complex ideas to patients. You might want to skip this one if there are kids in the car. Or if you're drinking anything...unless you want it to come out your nose!

Who better to ring in the New Year than the DentalHacks Brain Trust! Episode 29 features some Brain Trust all stars talking all about "year end stuff" in a dental office. How does everyone else do holiday parties and gifts? How does everyone else handle last minute stragglers that want to use their benefits before the end of the year? What kids of goals does everyone have for 2015? It's all here.

And it's all hilarious!

In episode 28 the DentalHacks talk with Dr. Barry Glassman. Dr. Glassman is a dentist and educator who gave up general practice to focus on treating patients with craniofacial pain and sleep disorders. In this amazing interview, we ask Barry what would be different if he were in charge of the dental world. The resulting conversation is brilliant and quite funny. Barry pulls no punches as he takes the whole dental world apart piece by piece!

The Brain Trust takes on analogies that we use to explain complex ideas to patients. Or at least that's where we start. From there we come off the rails in perhaps the most profane yet hilarious Brain Trust segment yet! Have you reached the "sweat pants phase of your career?"

This episode continues our interview of two current 4th year dental students. The discussion revolves around what it's like being a dental student in 2014. The episode will feel nostalgic for the grizzled veteran listeners but would be a GREAT listen for college students considering dental school!

The Brain Trust picks up where we left off in episode 26. New dentists Dr. Scott KollenDr. Josh Carpenter, Dr. David Scardella (www.cormierdds.com), Dr. Will ParrellDr. Dennis Frazee (www.frazeefamilydentistry.com) and Dr. Rich Weber (www.hamiltonfamilydental.com) discuss dental school debt, Monopoly money and professional regrets (no one seems to have any!) You'll hear what these new dentists feel are the best CE values for recent graduates and how some of them are paying for it! Finally we talk about where these new dentists see themselves in 10 years.

There's a lot of good information here for new dentists and veterans alike!

We've talked about dental school and being a new dentist a bunch of times. We've offered advice about what we might do differently as a student and new dentist. Now...we hear from some dental students and new dentists!

This episode features two senior dental students, Caitlynn Haas of the University of Michigan School of Dentistry and David Jacobs of the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry. They talk about what brought them to dentistry, their education and their debt in the first installment of this interview.

This week's Brain Trust features six "new dentists" that have graduated within the last three years. You'll hear from DentalHacks listeners and new dentists Dr. Scott Kollen, Dr. Josh Carpenter, Dr. David Scardella, Dr. Will Parrell, Dr. Dennis Frazee and Dr. Rich Weber. In our first installment of this "new dentist extravaganza" each of these dentists shares a bit about the journey they've taken since finishing dental school and how things are looking for a new dentist.

So join us for this listener driven episode of the DentalHacks!

Dr. Mike Melkers returns in today’s episode to talk about an eclectic variety of topics! First, we finish our discussion of innovations in materials science and how the more things change, the more things stay the same. Then we move into a discussion about “soft skills.” Mike teaches a lot of patient communication techniques that are second to none! He boils down a topic that seems complex into some very simple and useable tips. Finally, he discusses some clinical research on different isolation techniques (aka: the Isolite vs. rubber dam smackdown).

The Brain Trust continues it’s discussion of continuing education. Dr. Tarun Agarwal describes using shorter courses (for instance, at state dental meetings) as CE speed dating. They discuss treatment planning, endo, surgery, online resources as well as inexpensive CE options. Finally, they discuss DentalTown as the ultimate search engine for continuing education as well as a source of solid and inexpensive CE. If you want to hear about CE...this is your episode!

In today's episode, we begin a discussion of continuing education. We bring together all kinds of CE junkies and talk about the good, the bad and the ugly of dental continuing education.

In our interview segment, we talk to Dr. Mike Melkers. Dr. Melkers is a published researcher, teacher and admitted CE junkie. He's not ready to stop learning, but he assures us he can stop any time he wants. We discuss how new dentists (and experienced dentists who want to send their career in a new direction) should start their CE journey. What do you want to become? Where do you want to end up? What is the appropriate CE provider for you?

In the Brain Trust segment, we bring together Dr. Lance Timmerman, Dr. Melissa Zettler and Dr. Tarun Agarwal to talk about their experiences for CE. How do you choose what you need to know? What's the best bang for your buck? GPR/AEGD? Or is T-bone's suggestion of a "PPR" (private practice residency) the best way to go. This conversation is really funny and really informative. If you're a CE junkie or only aspire to be, this episode is for you!

Alcoholism. Addiction. Chemical dependence. Whatever you call it, we don't talk about it much. Even though upwards of 15% of dentists are directly affected, it's something we don't talk about. Until now, that is.

Today's episode of the DentalHacks podcast is a bit of a departure from our typical format. In this episode we present a conversation between two friends (Alan and Dr. Brett Kessler) who have direct experience with addiction. Both of us have multiple years of recovery from drug and alcohol addiction and you probably have never heard two dentists speak so openly and candidly about what we've been through and what we've seen. If you have any questions about the conversation I hope you'll email us at info@dentalhacks.com.
