The Very Dental Podcast Network

Everyone knows Howard Farran. Dentist, entrepreneur, author, podcaster and founder of DentalTown. He's the king of all dental media...and now we've got him.

We're not sure if Howard interviewed Alan or Alan interviewed Howard, but it doesn't really matter. You'll hear a candid conversation between two friends and podcasters talking about:

  • podcasts and Howard's mission to create an audio study club on a daily basis
  • starting out poor and seeing his father become a successful businessman
  • starting DentalTown for selfish reasons
  • how DentalTown helped Alan work through early recovery
  • should hard drugs be legal?

You're going to love this podcast. It's super honest and super fun. Also, do yourself a favor and check out:

Bob Sommers told us about asking for reviews in the last episode, but he REALLY knows how to generate referrals. His "5 Star Review System" works well for both. But he strongly feels that the referrals in generates is the real magic. How comfortable are you asking for referrals? Do you have a way to make it easy? Bob talks about how create a mostly automatic system to generate a constant flow of new patients primed to love you and the service you provide! Remember if you try the 5 Star Review System but sure to let them know you heard about it on the Dental Hacks for $50 off the set up fee!

Have you ever wondered what it's like to be a dentist in another country? Dr. Art Volker from episode 60 is a fan of high end dentistry and he's found that some of the most amazing dentistry is being done in other countries. At his suggestion we've decided to feature some international dentists in the Brain Trust. Art and Alan talk to Dr. Serhat Koken of Istanbul, Turkey and Dr. Andrew Chandrapal near London, UK. Both Serhat and Andrew teach cosmetic and restorative dentistry in their respective countries and are beginning to teach internationally. We discuss the similarities and differences in the educational systems, ways of practicing, taking continuing education among other things. Both Andrew and Serhat are really big participants in private dental Facebook groups, particularly "Style Italiano."

Everyone wants reviews in Google, Yelp and all the rest. And everyone always says, "the best way to get reviews on Google is to ask for them." Sure. Sounds great, but how do you do it? Who should ask? When do you ask?

Bob Sommers from bestlocalreviews.com created the "5 Star Review System." He knows the best way to ask for reviews. He has research to back up his claims. And he tells you exactly how to ask. In our interview with Bob Sommers we do a deep dive on how reviews work and the very best way to get them.

In our Brain Trust segment we talk about all the different ways think about new patients. We spend a little time talking about what we consider a "new patient." Is a patient that enters your practice as an emergency a "new patient?" Or are new patients only the ones who allow you to do a comprehensive exam? Listen to perennial favorites Dr. Matt Standridge, Dr. Melissa Zettler and Dr. Lance Timmerman as they weigh in on what constitutes a new patient.

Dr. Scott Ganz has been scanning patients with CTs since the 1980's. When you were playing Pitfall on your Atari 2600, he was 3D printing mandibles. I'm not kidding.

In the second half of our interview with the amazing Dr. Scott Ganz he tells us about how CBCT technology and 3D printing has developed and changed through is career. He walks  you through some of the earliest uses of 3D imaging in dentistry in some pretty incredible stories! Then we shift gears a little bit to hear about how international dentists are on the cutting edge of this technology and maybe, just maybe, how the U.S. needs to catch up!

The Brain Trust digs into the new patient experience. You'll hear Dr. Lance Timmerman, Dr. Melissa Zettler and (eventually) Dr. Matt Standridge talk about their process for bringing new patients into their office. Whether you bring them through hygiene or do a comprehensive exam you'll walk away with some pretty great tips on making a great first impression with new patients!

  • What do recent mergers and acquisitions of dental companies mean when it comes to the future of CBCT and dental implants?
  • Is CBCT the standard of care in implant dentistry?
  • What's the history of using CBCT technology in dentistry?

Dr. Ganz is a visionary and shares some great information in today's episode!

The Brain Trust discusses cars. All kinds of stuff about cars? What are they driving? Do they buy use their cars for business? Leasing or buying? You'll hear some great stories and ideas from a panel of Brain Trust favorites: Dr. Frank Clayton, Dr. Lance Timmerman and Dr. Tammy Bailey!

"My goal was to open an office where we could offer every service available dentally that would be convenient and affordable for everybody to come in."

In episode 67 we continue our conversation with Dr. Dennis Frazee. He's a relatively new grad. Like 2012 new grad. His startup is growing like crazy and he tells us about his keys to his success. First, he tells us a bit about how he chose his location and how important that ended up being. Secondly, he sings the praises of being able to sedate patients in his office safely and reliably. Last, he tells us where he focused his time and money (and how he financed it) on CE. This interview is packed with so many pearls you might as well make a necklace out of it!

In the Brain Trust we continue discussing our experiences with customer service failures and how we can apply these lessons in our own business. A couple high points:

  • There needs to be a specialist that helps arrange financing and best deals on equipment purchasing. If someone would do that and help save dentists money and headaches, they will make themselves VERY valuable.
  • Are all website design companies shady?
  • Why is there so much turnover in the dental sales industry?

Be sure to check out this video from listener Dr. Nicholas Miller! He took us up on our Youtube video challenge from a couple weeks back and we think you should check out his video!

You can see his whole channel here!

In our "Go Hack Yourself" segment we feature:

  • 99% Invisible: "A tiny radio show about design with Roman Mars." One of the more recent editions to my "don't miss" list of podcasts.

Dr. Dennis Frazee is a general dentist in Moorseville, Indiana. He's a relatively recent graduate...2012. He started a scratch practice soon after finishing dental school. And he's killing it. KILLING it! For such a humble guy, he has an amazing story and a lot of tips for anyone interested in startup practices, incorporating technology in the practice or even what CE to take right after graduation to help jump start your dental career! He talks about handling student debt as well has how to finance a startup as a new graduate. He's funny and informative. That's what makes him a terrific DentalHacks interview!

Episode 66 also features our first "all male" Brain Trust. Trust me, it's not as hot as it sounds. We feature Dr. Matt Standridge, Dr. Mike Keller, Jason and Alan talking about customer service. Specifically, customer service toward dentists. Did it end up as kind of a bitch session? Yes. Is it entertaining and enlightening? Yes. I think you'll find something you relate to here!

Posterior composites are a mainstay of general dentists. A lot of us do them all day long and we're comfortable. Then we run across case presentations on DentalTown or Facebook that make us rethink our approach. Some dentists have created techniques to take posterior composites from "just a filling" to full blown dental porn. In episode 60 we get to talk to three of these dentists!Art's dental porn

Dr. Art Volker, Dr. Matt Costa and Dr. Stephen Kuzmak are three young clinician's who have committed to better composite techniques. In today's episode, you'll hear about what inspired them, how they learned these techniques and everything you need to know to follow their path.

The best part about these amazing dentists is that they are accessible. You'll hear how funny and approachable they are and you'll learn hear about the course they're offering in October 2015. Steve's composite porn

How badly did you want to go to dental school? How many rejections would it have taken for you to decide dental school wasn't for you? Or were you like Dr. Mark Costes and wouldn't take no for an answer?

Today's episode features Dr. Mark Costes, a succesful multiple practice owner, dental practice coach and entrepreneur. He tells us about some of the challenges he had to overcome to become a dentist and how he's leveraged his dental training to become much more than just a practicing dentist. Case in point...Jason had Dr. Costes analyze his practice and talked about where you might decrease overhead (hint: dental supplies and lab fees are a pet peeve of his!).

Dr. Costes is also a dental podcaster and you can find his show, The Dentalpreneur Podcast on iTunes or on his website: www.truedentalsuccess.com. We're fans of what he's doing for the profession and we think you will be too!

This might be the most important episode of the DentalHacks podcast that we've ever done. In today's episode we interview Dr. Roy Shelburne. Dr. Shelburne has become a rock star on the speaking circuit because of his experience being prosecuted by the federal government for fraudulent billing for dental services. He spent 19 months in prison for things that you may be unknowingly doing in your practice.

Dr. Shelburne speaks all over the country helping dentists with their record keeping in an effort to avoid the life changing consequences he experienced. You'll hear these questions answered:

  • do you understand "intent to defraud?"
  • how can you establish that a treatment is "medically necessary?"
  • what systems should you add to your record keeping to avoid trouble?
  • how do you set up audits in your office to catch billing and record keeping mistakes?
  • why should we get rid of paper charts once and for all?

Dentists, you need to listen to this. But maybe more importantly your team really needs to hear this. Dr. Shelburne can help you bring your documentation to a level that avoids legal problems.

The key to local search is reviews. Good reviews not only get you in that coveted "7 pack" on Google, but new patients read reviews that your patients write, and often choose based on excellent reviews! But every dentist who has tried to get reviews, particularly Google reviews, knows that it's not easy. In today's episode, local search rock star Darren Shaw offers more tips on crushing local search and specifically explains the new "reputation builder" tool offered by Whitespark. Whitespark has offered a special code for DentalHacks listeners. Use the code "dentalhacks15" at checkout and you'll receive discounts on various Whitespark products! A few topics we talk with Darren about:

  • What does Darren mean by "be the answer" as a strategy?
  • How does content creation make a difference in local search?
  • Why should your website be created on Wordpress?
  • How important is mobile (rhymes "go mile" when Darren pronounces it!)?
  • How hard is it to change your website to mobile friendly?
  • How often should you update your website's design?
  • How can you get your patients to leave great reviews for your office?

Our Brain Trust segment features frank discussion of treating team members, family and friends. What's fair? What's the right way to do it? You'll hear what works from our Brain Trust panel! Our panelists for episode 54 are Dr. Dawn Kulongowski, Dr. Melissa Zettler and a special appearance from one of the original Brain Trust panelists: Dr. Andy Hayes!

The local pack. The 7 little balloons that show up on that Google Map when someone is looking for a dentist in your town. If you show up there, you're going to drive new patients to your practice. Period. Darren Shaw of Whitespark, a company that helps you improve your local search visibility, answers all kinds of questions in today's interview including:

  • What's the difference between organic search and local search?
  • What is a citation and why should we care?
  • What's the difference between a direct and indirect citation?
  • If you're doing a startup, at what point should you create/claim your local listings?
  • How should you handle local listings if you have multiple dentists in group?
  • How do you handle a local listing if you've changed jobs or moved your office?
  • Do citations have to be perfectly consistent? What kind of variations are O.K.?

On top of this, Darren talks about the importance of blogging. Which makes this blogger very happy.

Plus...if you use the code "dentalhacks15" you'll get a discounted rate on Whitespark products!

The Brain Trust (Dr. Matt Standridge, Dr. Frank Clayton, Dr. Tammy Bailey, Dr. Brent Young and Dr. Rich Rosenblatt) continue their discussion of how to handle "the unreasonables." Some things you'll hear in this episode:

  • Rich Rosenblatt hates bullies
  • Who do you need to contact at Delta to get an onlay covered?
  • How is the Waffle House different than Stuckey's?
  • Can truck stop dentistry be a legitimate business model?

The Brain Trust helped earn this episode it's first "explicit" warning. We editing out the cussing, but there was a fair amount of humor that was great but pretty blue. You've been warned!

CV4A9504Marketing is most effective when the content created is original and specific to the office. Todd Murray of Paper Napkin Marketing explains how dentists can leverage their assets to help make amazing marketing that fits their practice. Sure, using top notch video helps, but what about getting your team involved? How about spreading the word about how involved in the community your office is? Finally, Todd helps Alan understand that an entire marketing campaign needs to fit together. Blog posts are great, but how about making sure it fits with the message you want to send? This is another dental marketing "deep dive" that you won't want to miss!

Here's a sample of the kind of content that Paper Napkin can create for your practice!

The Brain Trust returns with an all star cast in episode 52. Dr. Frank Clayton, Dr. Tammy Bailey, Dr. Matt Standridge, Dr. Brent Young and Dr. Rich Rosenblatt all discuss handling the "unreasonables." How do you handle people with ridiculous expectations or terrible attitudes? When do you draw the line and "fire" these patients? This week's segment is hilarious but also very helpful. Don't miss it!

Paper Napkin Marketing. Maybe you've never heard of them. But you will. In episode 51 of the DentalHacks podcast we talk with one of the founders of this innovative and completely different kind of dental marketing company. I first met Todd Murray on Facebook. He's a listener and a fan of the show and his first line to me was:

"I wanted to take a moment and introduce Paper Napkin Marketing and share with you the best dental commercial you’ve ever seen. I guarantee it!"

I was intrigued, saw the commercial, and immediately knew he had to be a guest on the DentalHacks. We talk about dental marketing and how he came to use his marketing skills and experience in the dental field and we discuss some specific problems that dentists face in marketing.

The Brain Trust segment continues our discussion about referring patients to specialists, bringing specialists into your office. One of the best tangents that the Brain Trust takes this week is how not to take your patient's hangups so personally. Very good stuff!

In episode 49 the DentalHacks are trying something a little different. We've gotten feedback from a few listeners that they would prefer an entire long form interview on the show instead of splitting them over more than one show. So for those folks, we're trying it out. And there's no one better to do a deep dive with than Dr. Rella Christensen.

Rella Christensen was one of the founders of Clinical Research Associates (now TRAC). They've essentially been the "Consumers Reports" for dentistry for the better part of 40 years and you won't find anyone more knowledgeable on dentistry and dental materials than Rella. Our interview shows her kind demeanor as well as her no nonsense treatment of the data. She's going to change some minds with her discussion of modern crown and bridge materials, particularly monolithic zirconia and she's probably going to ruffle some feathers when she talks about enamel remineralization protocols and how everything we think we know about remineralization is wrong!

Oh...and don't get her started about sugar.

This is a really good interview with one of the smartest people in dentistry. Drink it all in, DentalHacks listeners!

Episode 45 of the DentalHacks podcast features Justin Ditkofsky of Cirrus Consulting Group talking about dental office leasing. If you only listen to one podcast this year...it should be this one! In episode 44, Chris Salierno shares more about his responsibilities as editor-in-chief at Dental Economics. Then he goes on to tell us about passive ownership of a dental practice vs. active ownership as well as his thoughts about the future of dentistry and dental reimbursement.

Then, the Brain Trust takes on posterior composites. Dr. Melissa Zettler, Dr. Rich Rosenblatt, Jason and Alan dig in to everyone's favorite procedures. How are they deciding what's appropriate for a direct restoration vs. indirect? What materials are they using? How do they prep teeth? Is a discussion about bonding agents more controversial than a discussion of religion? We cover it all from soup to nuts!

Dr. David Hornbrook was on the ground floor with the cosmetic dentistry revolution. In today's episode he discusses what it's like to be on the cutting edge of teaching dentists cosmetic dentistry and how it's changed over the years. From PFM crowns to minimally invasive veneers, he's seen it all and tells an interesting story of where he thinks the profession is heading. Recently David began working with Keating Dental Arts as the Director of Clinical Education and Technology and in episode 40 he gave us links to all sorts of materials and cementation guides that he has produced.

In today's Brain Trust segment we bring on 3 favorites: Dr. Tammy Bailey, Dr. Matt Standridge and Dr. Brent Young to talk about treatment planning and getting the most out of your hygiene recall exams. To celebrate the 40th episode of the DentalHacks podcast we feature an interview with the incomparable Dr. David Hornbrook! Dr. Hornbrook is a founder of the Las Vegas Institute, PAC-live and the Hornbrook Group. He's a wet fingered dentist and influential dental educator who has mentored thousands of dentists in his career.

Also, he answers email. Which seems like a silly thing to mention except that his approachable manner makes him one of the most popular dental educators today! HornbrookHeadshot

Most recently David has begun working with Keating Dental Arts as the Director of Clinical Education and Technology and we discussed some of the new educational offerings that David will be involved with at Keating. From there, we talked about communicating with the lab and the inevitable conflict that happens between lab technicians and dentists. Is it the lab tech's place to tell you that your impression sucks? Do you want to hear it? From there we moved into discussing digital impressions and where dental technology is heading.

We finish up our 3 part Brain Trust series recorded live in Chicago in Dawn Kulongowski's hotel room (if you must know). We finish up our discussion with how to get paid. Tarun discusses his implementation of in house financing and wonders why you haven't taken advantage of this amazing option in your office! (For more details, enjoy our DentalHacks special on in house financing here!) So don't miss Dr. Rich Rosenblatt, Dr. Tarun Agarwal, Dr. Tammy Bailey and Dr. Linc Harris as they weigh in!

Dr. Linc Harris has an interesting practice. Lots of complex restorative treatment, yet no hygienist. With the marketing success he's had, he's developed a technique to clarify the patient's wants and needs without taking on their problems. In today's episode of the DentalHacks podcast, he explains how to consult slow and treat fast to Alan and Brain Trust favorite Dr. Dawn Kulongowski!

Our all-star live Brain Trust continues with a discussion of how dental meetings and CE have changed. Are there too many dental meetings? Is organized dentistry out of touch with what dentists really need? We recorded live from Chicago during the Midwinter meeting with some of the Brain Trust favorites (Dr. Tammy Bailey, Dr. Dawn Kulongowski) as well as some of the DentalHacks favorite guests! We feature Dr. Tarun Agarwal, Dr. Rich Rosenblatt and Dr. Linc Harris.

This week's episode is kind of different. In our interview segment we feature a discussion with Dr. Linc Harris. Linc is a dentist in the small town of Bundaberg in the province of Queensland in Australia. He's a self professed small town dentist who has had amazing success! In today's episode Linc talks about how his practice "out in the middle of nowhere" has become an amazing success! He's a marketing genius who's had luck with a lot of different modalities and he talks all about it with Alan and Brain Trust favorite Dr. Dawn Kulongowski!

What is your comfort zone? At what point do you start to get nervous in patient treatment? Laying a flap? Removing bone? Finding the MB2? Sinus lifts? Every dentist has their own limits, but where do these limits start? Alan and Dr. Darin O'Bryan (classmates from the University of Minnesota class of 1997) discuss the roots of the dental comfort zone and how to push beyond where you're comfortable. You can find out more about Dr. O'Bryan at www.onemorereasontosmile.com.

Have you ever noticed that often times patients hear what they want to hear instead of what we explain to them? The Brain Trust consisting of Dr. Dawn Kulongowski, Dr. Tiffany Lee and Dr. Tammy Bailey along with Alan continue their "bitch session" featuring passive/aggressive patients a heated argument about polishing teeth and other good stuff!

Dr. Darin O'Bryan is a wet fingered clinician and CEREC educator. If you saw his schedule, you might think he's the hardest working man in show business! Darin teaches many of the CEREC Accept courses outside of Scottsdale for CEREC Doctors and it just so happens that he's a classmate of DentalHacks host Alan Mead. In this episode, Darin and Al catch up on the cool stuff that he's gotten into since dental school including an interesting discussion on denturists in Oregon and a crossover discussion on mid-level providers!

Episode 36 features the Brain Trust breaking some new ground! The Brain Trust decides that we're just going to have a good, old fashioned "bitch session." We're tired of it and we're not going to take it any more! We cover being sick at work, vaccinations, antibiotic prophylaxis and antibiotic overuse in dentistry. What starts out as complaining ends up being a pretty awesome discussion! Episode 36 also marks the first "ladies night" Brain Trust where we feature women only as guests! You'll hear favorites Dr. Dawn Kulongowski, Dr. Tammy Bailey and Dr. Tiffany Lee weigh in. Don't even think of missing it!

Laura Hatch can help your front desk collect more money, reduce patient cancellations and failures and fill your schedule. #notkidding In episode 35 we talk about some specific scenarios where the training videos produced by Front Office Rocks can help.

10 years from now, dentistry will look like... That's what the Brain Trust is discussing in episode 35. In this little time capsule we wonder if we'll have any more or less specialties in dentistry and how independent private practice may look like in 10 years.

So how do you train your front desk staff? It's not like you know how to do all that stuff. Nor do you have time to learn it. That's where Laura Hatch comes in. Laura is the founder of Front Office Rocks, an online training site specific to dental front offices. In episode 34 we talk to Laura about how she became a front office rock star (FORS) and how she wants to help dentists create practices with office systems that run like a well oiled machine!

What do you think dentistry will look like in 10 years? That's the question we asked the Brain Trust in episode 34. Dr. Lance Timmerman and Dr. Melissa Zettler join Jason and Alan to talk about what the future of dentistry looks like and where we'll be. (Hint: Timmerman mentions real estate. Twice.)

He's both a consultant helping with the changes and a practice owner dealing with similar difficulties in his own practice! Be sure to catch Gary's podcast, "The Thriving Dentist Show!"

The Brain Trust continues our  discussion about practice systems. Dr. Tammy Bailey, Dr. Frank Clayton, Dr. Melissa Zettler and Dr. Brent Young do a little complaining, a little laughing and a little bit of inventing! Toward the end of our segment we invent a potentially cool way to make small changes in your office and coin the term "microconsulting."

In today's episode we talk with fellow podcaster and practice management coach/consultant, Gary Takacs! Gary's podcast is "The Thriving Dentist Show" and has over 150 episodes and has been ongoing since 2011! We talk about podcasts: what he listens to and how he got started. Then we move onto his practice. Gary is part owner of a dental practice in Arizona. He talks a little about how he and his dentist partner found a "fixer upper" practice and turned it into the practice that they wanted. It's very interesting to hear how a practice management consultant literally built his own "dental test kitchen" to benefit his clients!

The Brain Trust features a discussion about practice systems. What are they? Why does it seem so hard to implement them? Dr. Tammy Bailey, Dr. Frank Clayton, Dr. Melissa Zettler and Dr. Brent Young discuss their own experience with developing and implementing office systems. It sounds kind of dry, right? Not when the Brain Trust does it!

Whether you're an employer or an employee you'll get a lot out of episode #31! In episode 30 we continue our interview with Dr. Barry Glassman. Dr. Glassman is a dentist and educator who gave up general practice to focus on treating patients with craniofacial pain and sleep disorders. We spend most of the interview talking about occlusion. Does occlusion cause disease? Does it cause pain? Does it really even matter that  much?

The Brain Trust continues it's decidedly NSFW conversation about analogies that we use to explain complex ideas to patients. You might want to skip this one if there are kids in the car. Or if you're drinking anything...unless you want it to come out your nose!

In episode 28 the DentalHacks talk with Dr. Barry Glassman. Dr. Glassman is a dentist and educator who gave up general practice to focus on treating patients with craniofacial pain and sleep disorders. In this amazing interview, we ask Barry what would be different if he were in charge of the dental world. The resulting conversation is brilliant and quite funny. Barry pulls no punches as he takes the whole dental world apart piece by piece!

The Brain Trust takes on analogies that we use to explain complex ideas to patients. Or at least that's where we start. From there we come off the rails in perhaps the most profane yet hilarious Brain Trust segment yet! Have you reached the "sweat pants phase of your career?"

This episode continues our interview of two current 4th year dental students. The discussion revolves around what it's like being a dental student in 2014. The episode will feel nostalgic for the grizzled veteran listeners but would be a GREAT listen for college students considering dental school!

The Brain Trust picks up where we left off in episode 26. New dentists Dr. Scott KollenDr. Josh Carpenter, Dr. David Scardella (www.cormierdds.com), Dr. Will ParrellDr. Dennis Frazee (www.frazeefamilydentistry.com) and Dr. Rich Weber (www.hamiltonfamilydental.com) discuss dental school debt, Monopoly money and professional regrets (no one seems to have any!) You'll hear what these new dentists feel are the best CE values for recent graduates and how some of them are paying for it! Finally we talk about where these new dentists see themselves in 10 years.

We've talked about dental school and being a new dentist a bunch of times. We've offered advice about what we might do differently as a student and new dentist. Now...we hear from some dental students and new dentists!

This episode features two senior dental students, Caitlynn Haas of the University of Michigan School of Dentistry and David Jacobs of the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry. They talk about what brought them to dentistry, their education and their debt in the first installment of this interview.

This week's Brain Trust features six "new dentists" that have graduated within the last three years. You'll hear from DentalHacks listeners and new dentists Dr. Scott Kollen, Dr. Josh Carpenter, Dr. David Scardella, Dr. Will Parrell, Dr. Dennis Frazee and Dr. Rich Weber. In our first installment of this "new dentist extravaganza" each of these dentists shares a bit about the journey they've taken since finishing dental school and how things are looking for a new dentist.

So join us for this listener driven episode of the DentalHacks!

Dr. Mike Melkers returns in today’s episode to talk about an eclectic variety of topics! First, we finish our discussion of innovations in materials science and how the more things change, the more things stay the same. Then we move into a discussion about “soft skills.” Mike teaches a lot of patient communication techniques that are second to none! He boils down a topic that seems complex into some very simple and useable tips. Finally, he discusses some clinical research on different isolation techniques (aka: the Isolite vs. rubber dam smackdown).

The Brain Trust continues it’s discussion of continuing education. Dr. Tarun Agarwal describes using shorter courses (for instance, at state dental meetings) as CE speed dating. They discuss treatment planning, endo, surgery, online resources as well as inexpensive CE options. Finally, they discuss DentalTown as the ultimate search engine for continuing education as well as a source of solid and inexpensive CE. If you want to hear about CE...this is your episode!

In today's episode, we begin a discussion of continuing education. We bring together all kinds of CE junkies and talk about the good, the bad and the ugly of dental continuing education.

In our interview segment, we talk to Dr. Mike Melkers. Dr. Melkers is a published researcher, teacher and admitted CE junkie. He's not ready to stop learning, but he assures us he can stop any time he wants. We discuss how new dentists (and experienced dentists who want to send their career in a new direction) should start their CE journey. What do you want to become? Where do you want to end up? What is the appropriate CE provider for you?

In the Brain Trust segment, we bring together Dr. Lance Timmerman, Dr. Melissa Zettler and Dr. Tarun Agarwal to talk about their experiences for CE. How do you choose what you need to know? What's the best bang for your buck? GPR/AEGD? Or is T-bone's suggestion of a "PPR" (private practice residency) the best way to go. This conversation is really funny and really informative. If you're a CE junkie or only aspire to be, this episode is for you!

Alcoholism. Addiction. Chemical dependence. Whatever you call it, we don't talk about it much. Even though upwards of 15% of dentists are directly affected, it's something we don't talk about. Until now, that is.

Today's episode of the DentalHacks podcast is a bit of a departure from our typical format. In this episode we present a conversation between two friends (Alan and Dr. Brett Kessler) who have direct experience with addiction. Both of us have multiple years of recovery from drug and alcohol addiction and you probably have never heard two dentists speak so openly and candidly about what we've been through and what we've seen. If you have any questions about the conversation I hope you'll email us at info@dentalhacks.com.

Last episode, Dr. Rob Ritter explained what it's like to be a speaker on the dental CE circuit. This episode we get down to business. We discuss his DIY website for his speaking business and how almost anyone can have an amazing web presence for next to no money. Take digital photos and show the world what you're doing for almost next to free. Then we talk about who dentistry has transitioned into an almost completely digital experience. He discusses digital impression scanners in depth (he's tried all of them) and gives his recommendation as well as what we should be looking for in the near future. Rob is a font of knowledge on materials and techniques and we've only just scratched the surface! Look for him to be a guest again!

Then we pick up where we left off with the Brain Trust's marketing round table. What are the keys to having a successful direct mail campaign? Can Facebook marketing work for dentists? How about TV and radio? Magazines? The Brain Trust weighs in on all of this. Join previous DentalHacks interview guests Dr. Lance Timmerman and Dr. Ryan McCall as well as Brain Trust regulars Dr. Matt Standridge, Dr. Matt Garrison and Dr. Melissa Zettler as they continue discussing what works and what doesn't in dental marketing!
