All joking aside, Russell's passion other than dentures is in fact pediatric dentistry and he does a lot of it.

So we weigh in on pedo class 2's, pulpotomies, sealants, sedation, and much much more.

The Hacks and the Interferences go through some "Working Interferences" style advice and it's a blast! Beware...it gets pretty ugly. In this episode Dr. Lawson waxes poetic on bioactivity.  What is it?  If these bioactive ions are released and no one is around to see them, did it really even happen?

In today's throwback episode (originally presented May 19, 2017), Dr. Dennis Hartlieb joins Jason and Alan to talk about his journey from believing composite was a "temporary material" into creating an entire rehab in composite!

Dr. Dennis Hartlieb was one of Dr. Frank Spear's original students. He's been learning excellence in restorative dentistry for 25  years or more. But like many dentists, he used to believe composite had no place in long term restorative dentistry. Then he met Dr. Buddy Mopper and he began to change his mind. Dennis is a really engaged teacher. Really approachable and seems to really understand how dentists learn. Some highlights:

  • Dennis's approach to team bulding...learn one, do one, teach one!
  • Simple composite solutions that can make a huge difference!
  • How does sleep apnea affect restorative dentistry?
  • A description of Dennis' course at Cosmedent, "CPR for the worn dentition."

Frank Clayton seals everything from teeth to driveways to decks and no job is too big, no crack is too large.   How many sealants can you place in a single setting?

All joking aside,  Frank waxes poetic on predictability and finding your happy place in dentistry.  Being the decathlon dentist isn't for Frank.  He likes to crush on things he's great at.

Per usual, Frank brings the funny, but we also coerce him into giving some actual clinical tips with products and stuff on high speed crowns.

If you want more Frank, and we know you do, join us on the Clinical Hacks Facebook Page.

Today we are joined by guest host, Dr. Mike DiTolla! We last spoke to Mike the week before most dental offices in the U.S. switched to emergency only for several months. Since Mike is a dentist and speaker, as well as being VERY knowledgeable about the dental industry we thought he was the perfect guy to help us understand what the dental industry was going to look like in the coming months and years! Some of the things we talked about are:

  • Glidewell does most of it's crowns with 3 DAY TURNAROUND!

  • What has Mike's life looked like since we started closing offices for the coronavirus?
  • Webinar wars
  • What does CE look like moving forward?
  • Jason drinks Truly
  • How is the "dental industry" feeling about the post-shutdown era?
  • Are patients coming back?
  • How has organized dentistry handled Coronavirus?
  • Charging for PPE?
  • Rella and Everclear
  • Hypochlorous acid fogger
  • Security theater?
  • How do n95 masks work? What about Brownian movement?
  • What's the future of dental meetings? (Mike DiTolla's hot take on the ADA meeting)
  • Mike DiTolla starting a podcast with Dr. Steve Buchanan?
  • The Voices of Dentistry is happening on January 22-23, 2021!
  • What about on site CE (Spear, Kois, Pankey, Cerecdocs, etc)
  • What will the "new normal" look like?

This "greatest hits" episode features two of our greatest Brain Trust segments, both recorded from Dentsply Sirona World 2018. Do you all remember a time when lots of people could get together in a convention center and look at exhibitors and see speakers? Yeah, me too.

Jason and Alan spent 3 days podcasting from the Spear Education booth at Dentsply Sirona World. Because the Dental Hacks are all about value, today's episode includes not one, but TWO amazing Brain Trusts recorded with a bunch of all stars in a double length podcast episode! We're here to 10x your podcasting experience!

The first Brain Trust features Dr. Rich Rosenblatt and Dr. Darin O'Bryan. They're best buddies and both of them are CEREC rock stars! Highlights include:

  • Rich's experience and tips on starting a study club
  • How to bring in an associate
  • Dental school horror stories from mid-90's University of Minnesota

The second Brain Trust features podcast newcomer Dr. Mike Skramstad (CERECdoctors rock star!), Dr. Craig Spodak (of the Bulletproof Dental Practice) and Dr. August de Oliveira (of Digital Enamel) in a hilarious round table including:

  • Will impression material ever be obsolete?
  • What's coming down the pipeline for CEREC (hint...it involves hovercrafts)
  • Firewalking with Anthony Robbins
  • Craig's new book: "The Bulletproof Practice"

You're going to love this double length episode. And if you don't, we're happy to give you a full refund! That's how we 10x your podcasting!

As always there's an expensive way to add virtual consulting to your website and a cost conscious one and Shawn is delivering the affordable with Ninja Forms and Zoom meetings.

We also discuss our favorite old school NES games that we had been playing during the lock down... what are your favorite games?

  • Insurance verification...it's pretty important right now, especially eligibility
  • Membership plans
  • Delta prepayment for cash flow (what's the catch)
  • What does it look like to drop Delta Premier?
  • Using COVID as an excuse
  • What about a second wave of COVID?
  • Why is Jason so damned handsome?

It seems like everyone is talking about aerosols. The Coronavirus crisis has focused our attention on the possible spread of the virus in dental offices and specifically what we can do to reduce it and keep our patients and teams safer. We don’t have all the answers yet, but we do know that suction evacuation and rubber dam is a sure way to reduce dental aerosols. Our friends at Zirc have been producing some of the best products in these areas for a lot of years. If you aren’t familiar with the Zirc family of isolation products, they want you to take a look. You can get the Zirc “Protection Pack +” trial kit for only $9! The protection pack includes their amazing Mr. Thirsty One step (1 Pedo/small and 1 Medium/large) size. It’s the bite block high volume suction evacuator all in one that doesn’t need any complicated hardware. Just plug it directly into your high volume suction and you’re ready to go! The Protection Pack + also includes three “pink petals” which turns any saliva ejector into a hands free suction machine! And finally you get two of Zirc’s amazing Insti-Dam! The Insti-Dam is a nonlatex dental dam and frame all in one! Pre-punched for that emergency endo that shows up in your office tomorrow! Go check out the Protection Pack + at dentalhacks.com/protection and try one out for the low price of $9!

We know this has been an incredibly trying few weeks for really everyone, our dental friends and their patients. Many dental teams are just scratching their heads wondering, what should we be doing? Monitoring the regulations on a daily basis thinking, when are we going to get back to normal? What do we do with our appointments? You aren’t alone. There’s no book on this stuff, well not yet at least, but you know what? We have some advice for you, and it’s coming from our friends at YAPI. All of you that know of or use YAPI are likely familiar that one of their founders is Dr. Gina Dorfman, a practice owner herself. Dr. Gina and YAPI’s marketing team are going to help you stay productive and stay positive during this time. Whether you are closed altogether, treating emergency patients only, we’re going to be sharing a variety of different resources that will help you stay on top of this issue and how to stay engaged with your patients and make sure you don’t miss any opportunities that come your way. As COVID-19 survivor Tom Hanks once said, There’s no crying in baseball, YAPI says there’s no downtime in dentistry! Jason and Alan were joined by the one and only Dr. Arun Garg for an enlightening Facebook Live last weekend. It turns out that not only is Arun a widely followed implant educator he's also a multiple practice owner! And guess what...he's been closed down like the rest of us! The Dental Hacks have a lively talk about what we've been doing to prepare to reopen our practices after the COVID crisis. Some of the topics we talked about include:

  • Who's winning during the COVID era?
  • How has his educational curriculum been affected?
  • How did Arun decide to close all 6 of practices and how did that go?
  • Dr. Garg on air filtration
  • The problem with the recommendations from the CDC/OSHA (no data)
  • Security theater (are n95 masks forever?)
  • Dr. Garg's experience with the HIV scare
  • Who can get out and who has to stay?
  • Al's new webinar: "How to Fake Your Own Death"
  • Arun's plan to ramp up to a normal volume of patients
  • In increase in deaths of despair
  • Jason's surgical caps
  • What are Jason and Arun doing to be ready to open
  • Arun's experience with a dental operating microscope
  • Using a microscope for oral surgery
  • Getting PPE is a mess/getting your team to wear it is also a mess
  • Treatment planning and case presentation in the COVID era

We've all got questions about what's going on in the world. And the Dental Hacks have answers! We don't guarantee that they're good answers, but they are answers. Jason and Al answer questions from the Dental Hacks Nation talking about what's happening in our offices, new PPE, cartoons of our youth and who is better at spelling (spoiler: it's Al).

Some things we discussed:

  • Do you really think dental offices will ever return to what they were B(efore) C(orona)?
  • Is it hard to stay true to your values and avoid moderating the Facebook group?
  • Who looks better with a mullet?
  • Ninja turtles, power rangers and Fox Spider-Man and X-men cartoons were pretty important in my childhood..ok and Star Trek. What about you boomers? (I keed I keed I know you’re not boomers)
  • Will patients still respect me when they catch me moonlighting as a bartender to make ends meet these next 12 months?
  • How can I run a leaner & meaner practice when the world stops coming to an end? I’ve been at this a while & looking at auto bill stuff & adding things up I see a lot of $$$ going out on crap I could probably do without. A re-centering of my practice & tips to consider.
  • Who is considering dropping insurance to improve reimbursement? Who will charge a ppe fee? Who will give in to all the staff requests for ppe regardless of what's required?
  • What’s been your favorite recipe over the past few weeks?
  • How do you imagine the role of your dental assistants changing? What if a hygienist were moving as needed (on a case by case basis) throughout the day instead of working out of a particular op?
  • Who would win a spelling contest?
  • What’s the best thing you’ve learned from this lockdown (non-dentistry)?

Alan talks with Dr. Craig Harder about his recent news exposure! Craig has been printing reusable masks for health care professionals in his town in Washington and has had several great news stories written about his efforts! Craig tells us how he's printing them and how he's customizing them for nurses and doctors in his area! We talk about how to print a 3D mask as well as whether our existing universal precautions were enough. Infection control in dentistry has always been a huge deal and we wonder if people are going to criticize what we've been doing!

There is nothing wrong with your podcast app. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are controlling transmission. If we wish to make it louder, we will bring up the volume. If we wish to make it softer, we will tune it to a whisper. We will control the horizontal. We will control the vertical. We can roll the image; make it flutter. We can change the focus to a soft blur or sharpen it to crystal clarity. For the next hour, sit quietly and we will control all that you see and hear. We repeat: there is nothing wrong with your podcast app. You are about to participate in a great adventure. You are about to experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the inner mind to the Clinical Hacks Podcast

Alan had a chance to discuss how the UK has been affected by the coronavirus with one of our favorite guests, Dr. Jason Smithson. He describes what's been going on in his part of England as well as how the government is handling it there. Jason describes what dentists are being asked to do with regard to emergency dentistry and how it differs from what's happening across the United States. He's interesting as always but gives some perspective from an educator's point of view as well. You're going to get a lot out of this one!

Our friends at Microcopy Dental have been making Damn Good Burs for more than 50 years! You need to give their single patient use burs a try! You need to request a free sample of their damn good NeoDiamond 1116.8C. It's a work horse round end taper coarse bur for crown preps and operative. It's a terrific bur by any standard, but the fact that it's single patient use means there's no risk of cross contamination and you always get a great cutting, brand-new-out-of-the-package bur. Jason and Alan had the privilege of speaking with Dr. Gary DeWood from Spear Education about what we can expect during the Coronavirus crisis. Gary's message is one that we all could use right now and we're grateful for him giving us some time. Some of the things we discussed:

  • What do you do when you find yourself at the edge of the cliff and you don't know what to do?
  • This is a "government mandated" economic downturn which makes it interesting and scary
  • What should we be doing with our teams? What about the potential bill being passed?
  • Tax credits vs. tax "cut"
  • Do a 4 week "break even"
  • Own the fear/angst
  • "It's hard to make a plan when you don't know what the rules are"
  • Furlough vs. layoff
  • What should we expect with regard to infection control? Are "universal precautions" still universal?
  • testing and how many people actually have the virus?
  • hopeful information about this virus
  • what's a the story on the n95 mask
  • How is coronavirus like a horrible game of telephone

Jason and Alan spend some time checking in after the first serious week of change after the Coronavirus. Both of us have closed our offices to everything except emergencies. Some of the discussion points:

  • What are Jason and Al doing with their practices?
  • How did the “emergency only” decision get made?
  • How are the employees taking it?
  • Everything is happening FAST
  • Feels like a sci-fi movie
  • Feels like we know a tidal wave is coming
  • Offices that are staying open...predictions?
  • Now is the time to contact creditors and see what kind of breaks they can give you
  • What are we doing to keep productive?
  • Podcast: do we keep delivering similar “normal” content?
    • Talk to some people in banking/finance
    • Maybe talk to some people in the dental associations?

Alan speaks with Dr. Caroline Zeller about the evolving coronovirus situation in the United States. Caroline is a dentist in an interesting situation. She has advanced training in oral surgery and splits her time amongst 4 different practices in Oregon delivering oral surgery services to underserved populations. She's working on her masters in public health, she's a delegate to the ADA and she's on the board of the Oregon Dental Association. As well, she has a terrific podcast called "Removing the Bite Block." In the episode we discuss the increasing pressure from our professional organizations for dentists to move to "emergency only" treatment. A few highlights:

  • If you think we're talking about universal precautions, you're missing the point. This is about people staying home and social distancing.
  • What constitutes an emergency: pain, swelling, fever and infection.

Zirconia is widely used. Many love it, some hate it. But there aren't many people that know more about it than the one and only Dr. Mike DiTolla! Mike joins Jason and Alan to answer questions from the Dental Hacks Nation about all things zirconia! Some topics we cover:

  • Mike's shoulder surgery experience and why you shouldn't feel too bad about missing a block again.
  • How Mike invented zirconia (Al's word, not his)
  • Is zirconia too strong?
  • Can you bond zirconia? And how does that work?
  • How does the lab approach zirconia (e.g.--die space, etc.)
  • 30 micron margins! Crown margins = really narrow class V restoration
  • Best ways to adjust zirconia (water on, very fine diamond)
  •  Mike and Josh Austin's AMAZING performances at VoD 2020!
  • What is zirconia's Kryptonite and why do we have to clean zirconia before cementing/bonding?
  • Best way to open an access/drill a hold into a zirconia crown and how to repair
  • Blended zirconia materials
  • Will zirconia eventually take over?
  • Cementing vs. bonding
  • The Lipscomb Scale of how much it sucks to remove zirconia crowns
  • How to get some free polishing and cementing tools from Ivoclar-Vivadent

Dr. Randy Houska is an interesting guy. He's a dentist in Vermillion, South Dakota which is home to the University of South Dakota. Alan and Randy discuss the pros and cons of being a dentist in a university town. Then Alan brings up a problem he's having with a particular earworm. Somehow, he can't get "You Got Lucky" by Tom Petty out of his head. Today we discuss what might seem like a mundane topic, yet it's a procedure that most of us do 8 to 16+ times a day and some surprising discussion actually came up from the longest hygiene exam of all-time. Can you make a career out of hygiene checks? Mac tells us about someone who does. How often do you check your patients? How long do you spend in there?   What do you do when something is wrong that might take more time to talk about? Do your hygienists help you fill the schedule if there's something that could be done same day?

Memorie Valentine is a hygienist with interesting experiences! She's practiced in several states in lots of different kinds of offices and has a lot of wisdom about communicating patient needs. Alan and Memorie talk about the concept of "planting seeds" about treatment. It turns out that some of the the very best people to plant those seeds are the hygienists that spend the bulk of their time with patients!

How many teeth have we done root canal therapy on that we probably never should have in the first place? It's an uncomfortable topic because we have to be humble about our ability to diagnose and treatment plan for success!

Dr. Lou Berman joined Jason and Alan for an in person interview from the Spear Summit 2019! We dove right in to cover a bunch of interesting endodontic topics!

  • How do you know when you SHOULDN'T start endodontic therapy? How do you evaluate the foundation before the house is built?
  • Creating Spear Education's endodontics curriculum
  • Root resorption...what's up with that? It's not coming from the pulp, it's coming from the periodontium (external)...it's NOT an endodontic problem!
  • Orthodontics and root resorption...feline herpetic viruses?
  • The financial commitment of endo (and retreatment)
  • "Root canals don't work on me"
  • Endo temporaries (why don't we seal the access?)
  • Single appointment endo vs. multiple appointment
  • Leaving teeth open
  • Berman Instruments new premium line!
  • Al's rubber dam clamp!

Practice management software is great. It’s a great big bucket of patient information that you keep adding to every day. You’ve got to have it. But what your practice management software can’t do is tell you when Karen is running late. Or that Bill mentioned in a text that he’s ready to do that crown. Our friends at YAPI love your practice management software, but they want to help you get the most out of it! That’s why they created the “Practice Dashboard.” The Practice Dashboard gives you a bird’s eye view of your office. At a glance, you’ll know patient’s readiness and priority: who is checking in, who is filling out paperwork, who is ready to be seated, who has been waiting for too long and who is running late. This real-time information enables dental teams to optimize patient flow, minimize delays, reduce patients’ wait times and handle the unexpected. So basically, Practice Dashboard from YAPI takes the information in that big bucket and puts it in front of the right people at the right time. Check out Practice Dashboard and all of the other great features YAPI has to offer at dentalhacks.com/YAPI. YAPI. It’s a funny name, but it’s serious software!

Organization is so important in all facets of your dental office. You have systems for your front desk. But what about systems for how you handle your clinical set ups? There are a ton of systems for organizing instruments, but our friends at Zirc make it easy for you to pick what’s exactly right for you! Zirc has a process that they call ZOBE. That stands for Zirc’s Organizational Box of Efficiency. They send a big box full of their different instrument organization options to YOUR OFFICE. You get to try it all out. Snap the tops on the tubs. Put cassettes in your own sterilizer. Try out YOUR instruments in whatever cassette you like! Plus, Zirc sets you up with your own organizational expert to help you determine what’s right for you. Also, if you do a ZOBE consultation by April 17, 2020...you’ll be in the running for a $300 Amazon gift card! Find out more at dentalhacks.com/ZOBE!

  • living near decent sport teams

The Clinical hacks this week discuss regular ass magnification.   Mac tries to be coy with his 3.5X loupes... THEN mid-episode has a reveal you won't want to miss.  Kevin one ups everyone with his level of magnification, but mainly because his eyes suck big time.   Zach has the most pathetic journey of magnification you could imagine, but admittedly he's on a pathway towards redemption.   Does your team magnify?  Do you magnify at home like we do?    How about headlights?

Tell us more about how you magnify at the office and get on there to make fun of Zach and his overseas cheap loupes on the Clinical Hacks Facebook Page.

If you're a dentist and you are trying to get case acceptance, that means you're a salesperson. You might not love the wording, but the concept is true. If you are explaining the pros and cons of treatment, the benefits of treatment and consequences of no treatment...you're a salesperson! Jeff Palmer of the Case Acceptance Academy explains how to help patients move forward in an ethical and predictable way! We discussed a lot of topics including:

  • Where did Jeff come from? How did he learn his case acceptance techniques.
  • Why is case acceptance part of marketing?
  • How do you measure case acceptance?
  • "Marketing can't control what happens after the phone rings"
  • In person coaching vs. online training (Jeff can do both)
  • The exam isn't the case presentation! (diagnose first, treatment plan second)
  •  "You need a..." is the wrong move after diagnosis
  •  Show, tell, ask
  • After you show the patient then shut up. Don't be the first one to speak.
  • Having a staff member ask the questions that the patient is probably thinking
  • Where is the best place to present the case? (you need a monitor and privacy)
  • Phone skills are KEY!

New patient exams are your offices best way to make a great impression! You get to meet the patient, show them the facility, get to know them and what they want from a new dental office. You know what the worst possible situation is? All of the sudden, your team’s schedule is off, your schedule is off and a chance to make a great impression is bogged down by a bunch of nasty paperwork. Our friends at YAPI have this situation solved. Your team can review submitted forms and quickly import patient information to your practice management software with no manual entry! Check out YAPI’s online forms and all of the other great features YAPI has to offer at dentalhacks.com/YAPI. Sit back and relax while we pound out some Class 4's together.  Kevin hates the really small DILFs, but he's not no problem with the big ones.   Mac and Zach kick it old school with some microhybrid love and try to convince Kevin that his "one composite fits all" just isn't going to cut it for these pesky chips.   We talk matrices, bevels (we like big bevels and we cannot lie), total etch, sandblasting, isolation, composite types, polishing and so much more.  Frankly, in the time it takes to listen to the show you probably could've done 2-3 DILFs and already be back in your private office enjoying a Marlboro Red.

Brian Colao knows DSOs. He's an attorney that helps people create and administer DSOs. He's been a frequent guest on the Dental Hacks and he gave Jason and Alan some of his time at the recent Voices of Dentistry meeting. We went deep on the topic of DSOs and covered a lot of information:

  • What is a DSO? (spoiler: "A DSO is an entity that provides nonclinical administrative support services to a dental practice that is owned by a licensed dentist.")
  • From one practice to thousands
  • When did we start to really see DSOs take hold
  • The episode where we met Brian, "DSOs and Digital Smile Design (DHP186)"
  • Was there a DSO bubble?
  •  Denovo vs. Acquisitions
  • What to do if a DSO approaches you?
  • How do you research a DSO that might want to acquire your office?
  • Brian thinks that there is probably a DSO that could fit most any office...go to a conference
  • What are DSO deals looking like for selling dentists?
  • The facts from Brian's mouth to your ears: DSOs are at 23% market penetration in the U.S. dental market right now. He predicts that there will be 80% market penetration in 7-10 years. He feels that you should plan accordingly.
  • EBITA: "Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, and Amortization"
  • What does a DSO look like?

Frankly it's the most passion I've seen from Mac on a dental topic. Zach is pro-biteguard but despite efforts to make biteguards affordable, they are still a tough sell and even tougher to get people to comply with.

We discuss various types of niteguards and how we make them and implement them in our offices. Occlusion and biteguards a a divisive topic and if you want to weigh in and let us know how wrong we are, please head to the Clinical Hacks Facebook Page.

Consumers are drawn to good reviews when they’re looking for any kind of business and your dental office is no different. Our friends at YAPI understand this. YAPI™ generates quality, authentic online reviews by automatically inviting your patients to leave reviews on the sites that matter most, such as Google, Facebook, and Healthgrades. Jason and Alan are joined by Dr. Jeni Perna (aka: yogi_dentist) and Dr. Vince Napoli (aka: invinciblesmiles) to talk about social media, practice models and orthodontics!

  • How did Jeni and Vince start with Instagram? For patients? For dentists?
  • Sharing vs. oversharing (authenticity helps define this)
  • Content creators and "feeding the beast"
  • What works on Instagram
  • Alan's fat thumbs
  • How to delegate office social media
  • How do you know what will get social media traction? (Goats, the answer is goats.)
  • Instagram Stories vs. main page
  • Al's bleach accident on his dad
  • Jeni and Vince are engaged to be married and they work together (a little bit...not full time)
  • Vince's amazing/interesting business model (traveling orthodontist)
  • Bioclear + orthodontics is a match made in heaven
  • Selling and buying specialty practices
  • CE for specialists (orthodontists specifically)
  • Orthodontists and aligners. Is there such a thing as a "plastic only" office?
  • Should someone else do your social media/Instagram? (spoiler: NO!)

This one goes out to all the CAD/CAMming, chairside milling, single appointment crowning folks in the Dental Hacks Nation. Y’all folks don’t always get the love that you deserve, but today is your day. Our friends at Zirc are really good at organization. And they really GET you CAD/CAMmers. They have a new product out called the Block Organizer. It’s like the adorable little brother of their amazing block lockers and it’s meant to help organize your CAD/CAM blocks in a drawer or on a desktop. It keeps your blocks right at your fingertips and Zirc offers you a bunch of different labelling options at zirc.com/labels.  Check them out at dentalhacks.com/blockorganizer and be sure to use coupon code: DHBlock on their website for a special buy 3, get one free deal!

Let’s say you’re at the Chicago Midwinter meeting and you’re looking for a great ramen restaurant. There are a lot of them, so how do you choose? Well obviously...you look at the reviews! With YAPI™, your patients get an automatic review request via SMS with a link that allows them to post a review while they are still in your office or any time later. YAPI™ also makes it easy for your patients to relate any negative experience directly with your practice. This feature helps collect feedback from patients, and it encourages any patient who may have had less than ideal experience to reach out to your practice and share their concerns privately. Your office can really benefit from great reviews in all the right places and YAPI can make it happen! Check out Instareview and all of the other great features YAPI has to offer at dentalhacks.com/YAPI. YAPI. It’s a funny name, but it’s serious software!

  • How Jason became a teacher
  • What role does social media play in where our educators are coming from
  • Is what you're seeing on Instagram a realistic goal for regular dentists?
  • What kind of cases make good "teaching cases?"

Go check it out at dentalhacks.com/damngoodburs! Let Microcopy's experience change the way you see dentistry with their damn good burs!

Another episode live from VoD!   This time we get Daniel Smith, DDS in the hot seat and he talks about transitioning his office from a privately owned family business to a Heartland owned DSO.

What are the pros?   What are the cons?   Does Daniel have to sell every patient 4 quads of SRP and 87 sites of Arestin?    Is every DO a crown now?

We talk a little more business than usual this week, but also tried to touch on some of the clinical stigmas that DSO's may or may not be known for.

Are you with a DSO?   If so let us know what your experience is like on the Clinical Hacks FB Page!

It's OK if you don't like surgery. No really...you don't have to love everything about dentistry. Dr. Craig Harder is a self professed "regular ass" dentist from Moses Lake, WA and he joined Alan on the day before the Voices of Dentistry meeting started to talk about some great stuff:

  • You could potentially survive for a year eating only potatoes.
  • Some dentists don't like surgery. And they're still good people.
  • Surgery--->more complications than crowns and filling
  • It's all about the reps...including how to handle complications
  • Hands on surgery courses should allow you to treat implant/surgery complications
  • Orthodontics is a whole different animal than dentistry. Treating faces vs. teeth.
  • Craig has a special olfactory superpower.

Image result for Dr. Melissa ZettlerDentists and their toys. We're famous for it. Is it a bad idea? Good idea?

Dr. Melissa Zettler joins Alan to talk about some of the toys they've recently purchased (Al got another microscope, Melissa got the Primescan). Is it always a bad idea? What about when it makes you more excited to go to work? Return on investment is often difficult to calculate on a new piece of equipment or fun instrument. But sometimes a toy can give you the shot in the arm that you've been looking for. Melissa and Al are both mid-career dentists and they discuss the fact that this quandary about dental toys might not apply to younger dentists due to the increase debt loads that they face.

Jason and Alan spoke with Dr. Marcos Vargas who is an educator and teacher. Marcos teaches at the University of Iowa and explains why today's dental schools aren't maybe the same animal as they were 20 years ago.

  • layering, color matching and how materials are simplifying
  • simplifying means less inventory
  • 3M universal shades are essentially the body shades from Filtek Supreme Ultra
  • layering vs. bulk fill
  • insurance patients vs. layering and "ultimate esthetics"
    • "insurance company pays for function"
  • what dentists know about teeth vs. what patients know about teeth
  • what's new with 3M bulk fill technology
  • Marcos's schedule at University of Iowa is split between research, lecture and clinical instruction
  • How to practice in a dental school
  • Dental school isn't what it used to be, it's much better to be a dental student now!
  • Teaching digital dentistry in dental school
  • Do dental students understand the debt that they're getting into?

The Dental Hacks also had a chance to talk with Dr. Paul Feurstein! Paul is a dentist, writer and educator and let's be honest...he's a dental meeting warrior!

  • Paul celebrates his 50th GNYDM
  • He goes to a LOT of dental shows
  • Dentists as inventors
  • Are dental products addressing problems that we don't have?
  • Paul has created a dental character and now he's become it!
  • How is he using SDF?

The Dental Hacks are joined again by Dr. Jason Smithson, this time with a "face to face" interview from the 2019 Spear Summit! The Hacks had a chance to see Jason speak twice on the first leg of his "North American tour" and we got all the details of what's coming up for one of our favorite educators and clinicians! Some highlights include:

  • The Arizona--->North Carolina-->Philadelphia tour
  • Simplifying posterior composites
  • bulk fill composites are ready for prime time
  • Social media and the "I can't do that" phenomenon
  • Anterior layering and being too thick
  • The return of anterior gold restorations
  • People pay for what they want, not what they "need"
  • Jason's treatment planning procedure, "a method of co-discovery"
  • treating to health vs. treating for esthetics
  • Demanding vs. Demands
  • Committing to a practice philosophy
  • If you can, should you? (the ethics of different tiers of dentistry)
  • How "minimally invasive" dentistry is making things difficult for esthetic outcomes
