The Dental Hacks Podcast

This special episode features an entertaining and informative "all Brain Trust" look at dental support organizations (DSOs) and how they're affecting dentists in the real world.

Jason and Alan are joined by Dr. Frank Clayton, Dr. Tarun Agarwal and Heartland dentist Dr. Tammy Bailey to talk candidly about DSOs and their effects on the dental marketplace! You'll hear:

  • Tbone's theory on who should sell a practice to a DSO and who shouldn't
  • Tammy talks about life as a Heartland dentist
  • Frank explains market segmentation in his own special way
  • Jason and Alan marvel at the fact that we get these cool people to continue to come on the podcast

Our guest for episode 81 needs no introduction. Dr. Rick Workman of Heartland Dental practically invented large group practices, and today you're going to hear how! We start with Rick's humble beginnings on the farm and move all the way to today's modern DSO practices, and I think you'll find the story pretty fascinating! Along the way you'll hear:

  • What is a "Dental Support Organization" or DSO?
  • What do DSOs do and what don't they do?
  • Is a DSO practice right for you?
  • How have DSOs changed the practice of dentistry and what will they look like in the future?

Join guest interviewer (and Brain Trust favorite) Dr. Tammy Bailey and Alan as we talk with Rick Workman about how group practice is done today!

Most dentists dream of a practice where they are in the back doing clinical dentistry and their office runs like a finely tuned machine without their input. That's where our guest, Sandy Pardue, comes in. Whether it's rescuing appointments from cancellations, avoiding embezzlement or helping the front office run more smoothly, Sandy and her business Classic Practice Resources can help. We had Dr. Dawn Kulongowski, Dental Hacks favorite and Classic Practice client to help with our interview. We think you'll find it valuable!

The Brain Trust follows up with more dental emergency goodness! Who was that guy that used his knee on someone's chest to take a tooth out? Why has almost every patient heard that story? What are the keys to scheduling emergencies in a way that doesn't mess with your mojo?

In episode 79 we speak with Sandy Pardue of Classic Practice Resources. Sandy helps dental practices create and monitor systems throughout the office but she's also passionate about keeping dentists out of trouble with embezzlement! Dr. Dawn Kulongowski joins Jason and Alan in an entertaining and informative discussion of what dentists can do to foil those that would steal from them!

In the Brain Trust segment Alan is joined by Dr. Matt Standridge, Dr. Dawn Kulongowski, Dr. Tiffany Lee and Dr. Mike Keller to talk about dental emergencies. We talk about the basics...most common, what the appointment is like and all that. Then, we start talking about our best dental emergency stories. And it gets really good!

Jason and Alan met at a course that Dr. Jason Smithson was giving in Chicago in 2013. They always knew that they'd like to have him on the podcast because he's an amazing dentist and a very good teacher. What they didn't realize is what a good story teller he is!

In episode 78 of the Dental Hacks podcast we give Jason a chance to tell his story from quiet and mild-mannered restorative wunderkind to international lecturer. If you've been on Facebook or DentalTown, you've probably seen the hyper-realistic composite dentistry that Jason has been posting since the early 2000's. Now you get to hear from him how he started doing it, how he got noticed and how you can up your composite dentistry game!
