Welcome to season 1, episode 9 of the Clinical Hacks Podcast!

More hot denture talk courtesy of our special guest Dr. Russell Schafer

This time we get into immediate dentures and printed dentures.  Hot takes abound!

Highlights of things Russell talked about:

Shining Path Scanner

Nextdent priting resin

Bosworth Soft Liner (sticks to resin well)

Locator Attachments

Soft Liner is way better than Tissue Conditioner per Russell

Rebases are under-utilized vs. relines

Repair your broken denture teeth with composite - for retention add a titanium pin plus some potholes in the acrylic

"Their (the patient's) comfort is not worth my injury."

--Katrina Klein

If you work in dentistry, it's likely that you will have pain at some point. Many of us don't think about prevention, so by the time we realize that we could have done things differently, it's too late! Katrina Klein is a bodybuilder, ergonomics expert and certified trainer who helps dental people with their pain. She tells us some stories about dental teams in pain and what she does to help. We dive deep into how she determines what can help and we talk a lot about indirect vision. Use that mirror!

Dr. Josh Austin and Dr. Lance Timmerman join Jason and Alan to talk about their new podcast, Working Interferences with Josh and Lance.

You know what would be a great idea? A podcast that gives advice to dental people. Or not so great advice. Either way, really. Dr. Josh Austin and Dr. Lance Timmerman have just the thing! The Hacks and the Interferences go through some "Working Interferences" style advice and it's a blast! Beware...it gets pretty ugly. Perhaps the most editing for content of any Dental Hacks podcast in the past!

Welcome to season 1, episode 7 of the Clinical Hacks Podcast!

In this riveting episode, we discuss what dental labs we use and why.

Highlights include:

- Kevin discusses how lab work is only about 10-15% of his crown and bridge, solidifying that he's better than the rest of us, but when he does use a lab, he uses Keating Dental Arts

- Mac has a crush on the Dental Guys podcast and uses the lab they promote Dental Crafters

- Zach is the guy who uses the local lab a few miles away #buylocal

- Who pays the most for a Zirconia crown?  Surely not the guy who prides himself as being Dr. Value

- Kevin scans (possibly in a speedo) and describes how a digital work flow goes with lab work.

- Sleep labs?  NTI's?  Biteguards..we touch on those also

Jason and Alan are joined by DSO luminary Vin Cardillo of Maeva Dental Advisors! Vin has been an integral part of the growing trend of DSOs spreading throughout the United States and he understand the industry from top to bottom! We discuss the history of DSOs (and where Vin fits in there), changes and growth and perhaps more importantly what kind of dentist makes a good fit with the DSO model. You might be surprised to know that perhaps most dentists aren't cut out to be leaders of this kind or organization and quite a few that get into it are really struggling. Vin gave us some amazing inside information and he's a true resource for any dentist considering multiple practice ownership! "You get the rough with the smooth."

--Dr. Jason Smithson on having a specialty

Alan and Jason continue their conversation about specialization. This episode is where we get to the good stuff where we really dig into the pros and cons of specialization and how generalists that long to be known for a particular kind of work might have it wrong! Jason debunks some of Alan's preconceived notions about how having a referral base makes a patient choosing treatment almost automatic. And Alan is mildly crushed.

Also we discuss the excruciating problem of having a 20+ year old practice/patient base and the ups and downs of having a "history" with people. Finally, we open the door to a potential next podcast to talk about an ideal way to do group practice.

This is a really good one. Don't miss a minute!

Once you’ve learned some things about sleep apnea you come to see the symptoms and consequences in LOTS of your patients. Bruxism, gastric reflux, TMD and lots of other conditions are correlated with sleep apnea. Dentists are quickly becoming the most likely screeners for this potential deadly condition, and Dr. Jamison Spencer is one of the most sought after lecturers on the subject. Dr. Spencer joins Jason and Alan to explain how to incorporate this treatment into your practice, what symptoms to screen, what gadgets NOT to buy and what diagnoses you shouldn’t be making! Dr. Jason Smithson joins Alan this week to talk about specialization. Jason has taken a pretty interesting path to the career he currently has. His first focus was going to be going through a fixed pros residency in the US with a plan to teach at a University in London along with having a cushy private practice gig to boot. Then things changed and Jason began to train in oral surgery, but once he realized the commitment he'd be making to more education, he switched plans again. He found himself in a General Practice Residency and actually stayed in that practice for upwards of 20 years!=== While he was here, he actually began training in a perio residency as well. Jason is a good person to discuss specializing with, but I think you'll find this conversation goes in directions you aren't expecting. We'll follow this conversation up with the second half next week!
