The Very Dental Podcast Network

Our guest for episode 216 is Dr. Chris Bowman! He's been on the Dental Hacks Daily and even recently gave us a terrific Clinical Hack of the Week a couple weeks back. But we just didn't think we had enough Chris Bowman, so we added 170% more Chris Bowman this episode! We cover a lot of topics including:

  • What are some of the things Chris learned early in his career that set him on the path to success?
  • Why does he feel so strongly that coaching can help dentists?
  • What makes a good coach and how do you find one?
  • Can someone have a "cosmetic only" practice and should they want to?
  • Why is it important to look at "how we've always done it?"
  • How can you choreograph your appointments to increase case acceptance?
  • Why didn't he invent the composite instrument of his dreams?

We've been using a new cement in our offices and it's made by our friends at Bisco. It's called Theracem. It's a dual-cured, calcium and fluoride-releasing, self-adhesive resin cement indicated for luting crowns, bridges, inlays, onlays and posts (prefabricated metal/non-metal/fiber posts). My favorite thing about it is that it delivers a strong bond to zirconia and most substrates with no priming or etching required. It's fluoride and calcium releasing and is pleasantly radioopaque on the x-ray. It's also super easy to clear. It's kind of perfect, really. Go check out Theracem from Bisco at dentalhacks.com/theracem!

There aren't that many things that are "shortcuts" in dentistry. But we've found one thing that kind of is. It's Pink Opaque from Cosmedent! Basically, it mask dark stuff more easily and gorgeously than anything else you've ever tried! Endo accesses, discolored teeth, porcelain fractures (even to metal!). You name it and you can cover it with Pink Opaque! Go check it out at dentalhacks.com/pink!

Our friends at Zirc want to help you up your organization game! Take for instance instrument storage and sterilization. They have an awesome solution that protects your expensive instruments from operatory to sterilization called the EZ Jett cassette. They come in all kinds of colors and sizes and fit most sterilizers. They're durable and made of an antimicrobial plastic to last and last! The OGs[/caption]

The Brain Trust has always been a huge part of the Dental Hacks podcast. We love to feature a round table of regular, "wet fingered' (ew) dentists talking about stuff that all dentists deal with. Episode 215 features three of our original panelists who have been featured over the years. We cover a lot of ground here, including:

  • Are baseball analogies good for gauging where you are in your dental career?
  • Would Rich recommend buying and merging a practice?
  • How is Jeff screening kids and adults for airway? (note: it's probably not what you think!)
  • How has coaching affected their careers?
  • What technology has been worthwhile? For patient outcomes or simply marketing?
  • Why are dentists training so much in high dollar procedures vs. the fundamentals?
  • Are long haul truckers good patients? Is it truck o'clock?

Our "clinical hack of the week" feature a trick for closed tray implant impressions. You can't beat PTFE (teflon) tape! To keep impression material out of the impression coping ends you can wad teflon up kind of fat and gently pack it into the top. Mr. Thirsty One Step is a bite block and a tongue guard with built in suction. It's great for dentists and hygienists because it removes water spray, retracts the cheek and tongue and keeps the patient's mouth open all in one easy to use and disposable package. There are several options out there for these kind of mouth guards, so why is Mr. Thirsty better? First, it's all one piece there is nothing to sterilize or clean. Take it out of the package, use it, then toss it. Secondly, the bite block has a little less "give" than it's competitors, and in my hands...that's a plus. You should check out Mr. Thirsty at dentalhacks.com/mrthirsty and use the coupon code "TRIAL10" on the website for $10 off of a Mr. Thirsty One Step trial kit! This is a great deal on a great product, so go check it out!

Jason and Alan go "live to tape" for only the second time and this time we are joined by the one and only Andre Shirdan! Andre is a speaker, dental consultant and coach with a ton of good information and a great sense of humor! We cover a lot of ground in this episode. Here are a few things that we covered!

  • dentists (and the industry of dentistry) avoids change (how do you buys stamps?)
  • how did he learn about and where should dental teams learn about customer service (think Disney, Ritz Carlton and Chick-Fil-A)
  • What is C.R.E.W.? Where did it come from and how does it work?
  • how can we simplify perio treatment in our offices?
  • how he created the biggest Eaglesoft user's group on the internet
  • how has dentistry changed over his 30 years in the industry?

Jason put up a killer "Clinical Hack of the Week" in the Dental Hacks Nation this week. Everyone has probably been in a situation where they started preparing a crown and realized that they didn't get a preoperative impression to create a provisional! JLips describes using a generic impression of a typodont and make a suck down in bleach tray material. It's soft enough to adapt over the patient and still held the anatomy of a tooth! #brilliant

We'd like to welcome a new sponsor to the Dental Hacks Podcast. Bisco Dental has been creating innovative dental product for a long time and we appreciate their support! We all run into deep cavity preps. It happens often enough that we really need to have a strategy for it. Do you place a liner? If so, what kind? Do these liners really do anything? And man...they are a pain to place! Enter Theracal LC. It handles just like a flowable composite. You place it right where you want it and then light cure it. You restore as you normal would over top of it. It’s just as simple as that. You get proven benefits of a liner. First, calcium release stimulates hydroxyapatite and secondary dentin bridge formation. It has an alkaline pH which promotes healing and it creates a protective seal. It’s radioopaque so you can see it on an x-ray. It’s got all the benefits you would look for in a liner, without all the hassle. Go check out Theracal LC at dentalhacks.com/theracallc. We think this is a tool you’ll be glad you have.

Nonstick instruments aren't always nonstick, right? Over time they become a bit stickier. And there is NOTHING more irritating than composite pull back on an instrument. Cosmedent has a sculpting resin that solves this problem without staining your composite. Check out HEMA-free "Brush and Sculpt" at dentalhacks.com/brushandsculpt. You may not need it for every case, but you'll be glad you have it for the cases that need it!

Everyone has those instruments that you’re glad to have, but maybe you don’t use them every day. Or maybe even every week. You paid a bunch for them and you want to take good care of them, but they don’t really fit in any particular regular set up or cassette. Our friends at Zirc have you covered! They have a product called the “Performance Tool Organizer.” It’s a compact cassette made for exactly these instruments! Check it out at dentalhacks.com/performance. Use coupon code DHPTO for a special “buy 4 get one free” deal!

First, we’d like to invite you to come take Treating the Worn Dentition with us! There are a few spots left and you can find out more information at dentalhacks.com/worndentition if you want to check that out.
