Sit back and relax while we pound out some Class 4's together. Kevin hates the really small DILFs, but he's not no problem with the big ones. Mac and Zach kick it old school with some microhybrid love and try to convince Kevin that his "one composite fits all" just isn't going to cut it for these pesky chips. We talk matrices, bevels (we like big bevels and we cannot lie), total etch, sandblasting, isolation, composite types, polishing and so much more. Frankly, in the time it takes to listen to the show you probably could've done 2-3 DILFs and already be back in your private office enjoying a Marlboro Red. If you have opinions about MILFs please visit our Facebook Page and let us know where we got it right (and by right, we mean wrong). |

Controversy this week! Kevin Fryer is pro-biteguard with his NTI's and sleep appliances. Mac goes on a mile long rant about biteguards and how much they suck. Frankly it's the most passion I've seen from Mac on a dental topic. Zach is pro-biteguard but despite efforts to make biteguards affordable, they are still a tough sell and even tougher to get people to comply with. We discuss various types of niteguards and how we make them and implement them in our offices. Occlusion and biteguards a a divisive topic and if you want to weigh in and let us know how wrong we are, please head to the Clinical Hacks Facebook Page. |

Another episode live from VoD! This time we get Daniel Smith, DDS in the hot seat and he talks about transitioning his office from a privately owned family business to a Heartland owned DSO. What are the pros? What are the cons? Does Daniel have to sell every patient 4 quads of SRP and 87 sites of Arestin? Is every DO a crown now? We talk a little more business than usual this week, but also tried to touch on some of the clinical stigmas that DSO's may or may not be known for. Are you with a DSO? If so let us know what your experience is like on the Clinical Hacks FB Page! |

Dr. Melissa Zettler joins Alan to talk about some of the toys they've recently purchased (Al got another microscope, Melissa got the Primescan). Is it always a bad idea? What about when it makes you more excited to go to work? Return on investment is often difficult to calculate on a new piece of equipment or fun instrument. But sometimes a toy can give you the shot in the arm that you've been looking for. Melissa and Al are both mid-career dentists and they discuss the fact that this quandary about dental toys might not apply to younger dentists due to the increase debt loads that they face.

If you're a dentist and you are trying to get case acceptance, that means you're a salesperson. You might not love the wording, but the concept is true. If you are explaining the pros and cons of treatment, the benefits of treatment and consequences of no treatment...you're a salesperson! Jeff Palmer of the
To effectively do chairside CAD/CAM, you’ve got to be organized. Our friends at Zirc are really good at organization. You want to have the right inventory of blocks, but you don’t want to overstock. Most importantly, you need to be able to find exactly what you’re looking for when you’re looking for it! If you’re doing CEREC or other chairside milling, you should control block chaos with their CAD/CAM Block Locker! This is a really cool product and right now Zirc is offering the Dental Hacks Nation a really great price. If you use the coupon code “DHLOCKER” on their website at
If you could take a course from a living legend, wouldn’t you? Dr. Buddy Mopper is a giant in cosmetic dentistry. He basically created cosmetic bonded dentistry and he is still teaching! His legendary course “Catch the Composite Wave: and Surf its Potential” is coming up on May 7-8, 2020 at Cosmedent’s Center for Esthetic Excellence in downtown Chicago! And here's the deal...this course is almost sold out, so you need to act now! Not only will you get a bunch of face time with Dr. Mopper, you’ll also get to work with the one and only Dr. Dennis Hartlieb! If you want to do esthetic composite, this is where you should start! Check it out at
New patient exams are your offices best way to make a great impression! You get to meet the patient, show them the facility, get to know them and what they want from a new dental office.

Jason and Alan were joined by Tom and Vanessa from Localmed. Localmed was the Platinum sponsor of Voices of Dentistry 2020 and we really appreciate their support! Some of the things we talked about:
Brian Colao knows DSOs. He's an attorney that helps people create and administer DSOs. He's been a frequent guest on the Dental Hacks and he gave Jason and Alan some of his time at the recent Voices of Dentistry meeting. We went deep on the topic of DSOs and covered a lot of information:
Our friends at Cosmedent are offering a course by Dr. Rhodri Thomas called “The Art of Resin.” It’s this coming May 14th and 15th at the Cosmedent Center for Esthetic Excellence in Chicago overlooking Michigan avenue! Rhodri is a dentist and artist who has an interesting take on resin and cosmetic dentistry. Rhodri will demonstrate step-by-step simple and complex Class IVs, a direct resin veneer, how to mask a discolored tooth and the steps for mastering finishing and polishing. You will be able to practice all the exercises live with Dr. Thomas and gain invaluable feedback as you work. There will also be pre-recorded instructional videos of each stage to ensure everyone is supported regardless of clinical speed. Go check it out at
Are you in one of those offices where the system for team communication consists of “yelling down the hallway?” Come on guys, that’s so late 90’s. It’s time for you to get up to speed and get your team on the same page!
OK CAD/CAMmers...I want you to imagine a workspace so clean and organized that you won’t even recognize your operatory. Our friends at Zirc are really good at organization. And they really GET you CAD/CAMmers. They have a new product out called the Block Organizer. It’s like the adorable little brother of their amazing block lockers and it’s meant to help organize your CAD/CAM blocks in a drawer or on a desktop. It keeps your blocks right at your fingertips and Zirc offers you a bunch of different labelling options at zirc.com/labels.The coolest thing about the Block Organizer is how it was created to fit within existing cabinets! You won’t need to change anything in your workflow except the extra time that you’ll save!
Today's episode of Dental Hacks Shorts is actually an episode of "The Peaceful Practice" podcast that Alan does with Dr. Dawn Kulongowski. It's a departure from the Dental Hacks, yet I think it's a good one to hear! Please enjoy our discussion of "getting outside your comfort zone!"
Dr. Mike Keller (aka:
Jason and Alan are joined by Dr. Jeni Perna (aka:
This one goes out to all the CAD/CAMming, chairside milling, single appointment crowning folks in the Dental Hacks Nation. Y’all folks don’t always get the love that you deserve, but today is your day. Let’s say you’re at the Chicago Midwinter meeting and you’re looking for a great ramen restaurant. There are a lot of them, so how do you choose?
Dr. Jason Smithson joins Alan again...this time to talk about dental education and how one becomes a "teacher" in dentistry:
Dr. Margaret Frankel and her assistant Dena Grissman are a dental team by day and competitive ice skaters on the weekends! Alan had a chance to talk with them about their history as friends, skating teammates and now co-workers! Margaret and Dena will be heading to an upcoming national competition in the coming weeks!
It's OK if you don't like surgery. No really...you don't have to love everything about dentistry. Dr. Craig Harder is a self professed "regular ass" dentist from Moses Lake, WA and he joined Alan on the day before the Voices of Dentistry meeting started to talk about some great stuff:
The Dental Hacks were joined by two rock stars for an amazing Brain Trust at the Voices of Dentistry meeting! Dr. Danny Domingue and Dr. Daniel Smith joined Jason and Alan at their booth in Scottsdale to talk about a variety of interesting topics!
Zirc has something new and cool for CAD/CAM dental teams! When it comes to storing milling blocks for CAD/CAM Milling Machines, they can often end up scattered in drawers. This makes it impossible to take inventory at a glance or find what you need when you need it. The new Block Organizer™ is here to help! They fit inside most drawers and are designed to help organize the chaos by providing a well labeled, storage system within your existing cabinetry. Check them out at
Why pay 4 different places for 4 different services when YAPI can do it all for you for one great price? Go check them out at
The Voices of Dentistry is a great dental meeting, but it's also a great chance to get together with your internet friends! Dr. Kevin Fryer (just call him Kevin) joined Alan before the meeting kicked off to talk about a bunch of fun stuff:
