The Very Dental Podcast Network

Jason and Alan are joined again by Adam McWethy of Spear Education. When asked "what is it that you actually do here" Adam has some stories to tell. What does all that Spear/Cerecdoctors stuff look like to a guy who isn't a dentist, but works closely with all the amazing clinicians out there? It's an interesting, funny and somewhat profane look at dental CE and dentists who are trying to do better!

The Seattle Protocol

This week's Clinical Hack of the Week is from JLips himself. Jason's been studying up on Dr. Jeff Rouse's "Seattle Protocol" using the Mytap device to help develop a treatment plan for adult airway treatment! He's also using Thermacryl beads, which is how he makes his provisionals, to reline these devices.

This is an episode that's been a long time in the making! Alan is joined by the co-hosts of "A Tale of Two Hygienists," a podcast focusing on dental hygiene! If you haven't heard the show, you should check it out! We recorded these interviews at the Chicago Midwinter last February and this found footage is pretty great!

For the first half of the interview Andrew Johnson and his brother Mike Johnson tell Alan all about how "restorative hygiene" works. This is a style of hygiene practice that you might not be familiar with, but these guys really get it and they've got lots to say about it!

Then Michelle joins us to talk about midlevel providers of all types and where dental hygiene fits into all of it. These hygienists are passionate about their profession and they've got some interesting viewpoints!

Jason and Alan are joined by Dr. Ricardo Mitrani. Dr. Mitrani is a member of the resident faculty of Spear Education. He was born and raised in Mexico City, Mexico and did his prosthodontic residency at the University of Washington. He was a classmate of one of our previous guests, Dr. Gregg Kinzer.

In today's episode we range widely over patient communications, what patients understand about the treatment we offer and how we can thread the needle between our patient's perceptions of overtreatment and negligence. We think you'll really enjoy our conversation and you'll be seeing lots more of Ricardo!

Jason and Alan are joined by a panel of experts to talk about bonding and composite restorations! Our Brain Trust panel consists of podcasting rock star Dr. Joshua Austin of the Working Interferences podcast, Dr. Marc Geissberger and Dr. Adam Hodges!

We delve into everything about bonding in this round table! Some highlights:

  • How should we treat composite differently than other materials?
  • What's better about composite now than 10-15 years ago?
  • The evolution of bonding systems...is simpler better?
  • Total etch vs. selective etch vs self etch
  • How can you maximize enamel engagement in your preps?
  • What are the properties of newer composites, including the newer bulk fills?
  • How do you evaluate information about materials? Who is a good source of information?

Jason and Alan had a chance to visit Spear Education last month. One of the amazing people that they were able to interview while they were visiting was Dr. Gary DeWood. Gary's list of accomplishments in dentistry is long. He's been at Pankey and he's a founder at Spear Education. He still teaches some of the foundational courses at Spear (Facially Generated Treatment Planning anyone?) but now spends more time with Spear Practice Solutions, the coaching and consulting arm of Spear Education.

Our discussion ranged all over the place, but one shocker was Gary's explanation of why he stopped doing case presentations! Other highlights of our conversation include:

  • How is a dental office like a pirate ship? (Arrrrr!)
  • Hygiene scheduling and the illusion of scarcity
  • Dashboards and using big data
  • What's the best way to dive into Spear Education

You're going to love this interview! If you have any questions for us or for Gary, drop us a line at info@dentalhacks.com!

We'll share any materials, etc. that might make your life a little easier and how we use them. But better than that...we're hoping that you members of the Dental Hacks Nation will share your clinical hacks with us!
